“You tell us,” Maz says.

She wiggles her eyebrows.

“Why are you leaving?” Birdie asks. “Did something happen with Archer again? Or Cullen? Or both?”

“Wait,” Maz says. She grabs my shoulders. “Did you take on both at the same time?”

“No,” I say. I wiggle away from Maz. “I just need to check on things. Everything happened so fast, you know? I was home. Then I was whisked away. Now this is home. I just…”

“It’s understandable,” Birdie says. “Just know that going back won’t change a thing going forward.”

“Oh, that’s powerful,” Maz says to Birdie. “You should write that down. That could be on a shirt or a hat.”

“I can have a legit family business!” Birdie yells and then giggles.

“She needs a drink,” Maz says.

“I need a drink,” I say.

“Then you can’t drive,” Birdie says. “Let’s do that instead. Let’s get drunk and watch dirty movies.”

“Dirty movies?” I ask.

“You don’t want to know what she’s into,” Maz says. “I saw once and just…”

“What?” Birdie asks. “Don’t the glasses give it away?”

I lift an eyebrow. “You’re into nerdy porn?”

“Something like that,” Birdie says with a wink. “Don’t crash my SUV, okay?”

“I’ll do my best,” I say. “This is weird. I was all excited to leave. But now I’m feeling… like…”

“You can say it,” Birdie says. “You love us.”

“You two?” I ask, pointing to Birdie and Maz. “Of course I do. You can’t imagine how big and amazing my room is with theHeirs. And I choose to live here, sharing a room with you, Birdie. You snore.”

“I do not snore,” Birdie says.

Maz laughs. “If you’re going to bolt, just go. Stop thinking about it. Go compare your old life to your new one. You’ll be back though.”

“Tough to weigh this out,” I say. “My old life I’m poor and have zero future. But at least I know I’ll be alive. Here, I apparently am part of a mafia family. I don’t know who my family is. And when I find out, someone from another mafia family is going to kill me.”

“Sounds fun,” Maz says. “Now go.”

I can’t believe what I do next.

I step forward.

I hug Maz and Birdie.

As though I’m never going to see them again.

It’s kind of weird rolling up intoDrowningsidein such an expensive SUV.

I feel out of place.

I am out of place.
