“Of course I am.”

I glance at Fay’s front door.

Then I point.

“Fay?” I ask.

“What about her?”

“Nothing,” I say.

I want to know nothing of Marty and Fay and their arrangement for drugs.

“What are you doing out here?” I ask.

“Sitting around,” Marty says.

“Not allowed inside? Did you make an ass of yourself and Fay booted you?”

“Something like that,” Marty says. “I guess things don’t change. Except you, Jaci.”

“I didn’t change,” I say.

“You left.”

“I had to leave. It’s a long story.”

“I bet it is,” Marty says. “I miss you. A lot.”

“I wish I could say the same about you, Marty. But you’re high right now.”

“Why does that matter? This is how I survive being here. Did you come back to judge all of us?”

“No,” I say. “I came back to talk to Fay.”

I step over Marty and when I get to the front door, he makes a noise.

“Oh, fuck, wait,” he says. “You can’t go in there.”

I look back and watch him climb to his feet.

He sways left to right.

“What did you say, Marty?” I ask.

“You can’t go in there. That’s why I’m sitting here. Duh.” He smacks his forehead. “I forgot. You can’t go inside, Jaci. Nobody can go inside. Okay?”

“And why can’t I go inside?”

“You just can’t. Trust me.” Marty lowers his stare. “Jaci, it’s not a joke. You… can’t…”

Fuck this.

I rip open the old screen door and grab the doorknob.

“Jaci!” Marty yells.

The door is unlocked and I step into the house.
