Fay twists the bag and hands it to Marty.

Marty puts his head back and groans.

He places the grocery bag of ice to his eye.

We’re still in silence.

None of us are in the mood to talk.

Fay is scared and embarrassed.

I’m confused.

Marty is just plain high.

“What the fuck was that about?” Marty asks. “I gave the signal. Right?”

“So that’s what you do?” I ask Marty. “You sit on the porch, get high and give signals? Signals for what?”

“Jaci,” Fay says.

“What?” I ask. “That guy wanted to do some bad stuff to me. Don’t I have the right to know what the fuck is going on?”

“I warned you,” Fay says. “You also had protection.”

“I didn’t know Archer followed me. That’s part of the reason I came back here.”

“He followed you? He’s part of…”

“I know who he is,” I say.

“That guy hits hard,” Marty says. “He punched me, right? I didn’t dream that?”

“Where are Brie and Kae?” I ask.

“They don’t hang here anymore,” Marty says. “They went and got some boyfriends and shit. They’re just locked in now. You know?”

“Locked in?” I ask.

“Controlled,” Marty says.

I sigh and shake my head.

I look at Fay again. “Your face. Tocky did that.”

Fay nods.

“Why?”

“It’s what he does.”

“But why is he a part of your life?”

“Supply and demand,” Marty says.

“If you say one more word, I’m going to hit the other side of your face,” Fay warns Marty.

“Fine,” Marty says. He stands up. “I’m going to take a pill or three. Help with this pain.”
