“Marty,” I say. I touch his arms. “Who are you right now?”
“I’m who I was always meant to be, Jaci Ruby,” he says. “I just never jumped because I was waiting for you.”
“Stop this, Marty,” I say. “Stop acting like this. Get cleaned up and then come visit me. AtDSC. You can spend the night or something. Okay?”
“Yeah, okay,” Marty says. “That sounds like a plan.”
Marty turns and walks away.
Not even two seconds later he reaches into his pocket and takes out some kind of pills, then throws them into his mouth like candy.
I frown.
My past is nothing but hell.
A terrible, horrible hell.
Now I have to face Fay again.
When I look at her, she’s crying.
She lights a fresh cigarette and keeps me away from her.
“Fay,” I whisper.
“Why did you really come back here?”
“Things felt hectic,” I confess. “I thought this would feel like home. I thought I could catch my breath.”
“No, Jaci. This is not home.”
“I can see that.”
“You need to leave. If Tocky tells anyone what happened…”
“Then what? Are you in more danger now?”
“I can handle him,” Fay says.
“You sure about that?” I ask, pointing to her eye.
“Don’t be a bitch right now,” Fay says.
“I’m not. I’m worried about you.”
“Worry about yourself. You have enough going on. You have Archer Amatti following you around.”
“I knew it,” I say. “I saw the look on your face. You know him. You know his family. You know who he is. Which means…”
“Jaci, stop it,” Fay says. “Listen to me carefully. I’m saying this one more time to you. You need to go back toDSCand stay there. Okay? You see the reality here now. Fine. Maybe it’s a good thing you came back like this. But you need to never come back again. Ever.”
“You raised me,” I say. “That’s it? I can never see you again? I can never call you again? If the things I’m told are true about me, then I can help you, Fay. I can do something for you. I can…”
Fay flicks her cigarette into the sink and turns on the water.
The cigarette dies with a quick sizzle.
Fay gets closer to me and touches my shoulders.
