“Last name again?”

“Ruby,” I whisper. “Jaci. Ruby.”

“Jaci or Ruby?” Linda asks.

“Don’t be mean to her,” Maz says. “You’re mad at us, not her.”

“You’re failing economics,” Linda says.

“Fuck economics,” Maz says.

“The language!” Linda yells.

“Oh, please, should we tell Jaci your last name and affiliation?” Birdie asks.

“And you,” Linda says, pointing to Birdie. “You don’t read a single thing. You were given one small assignment, to read a book.”

“Did you see that book?” Birdie asks. “It was huge. I don’t read big books. Too many words. You can’t keep up.”

Linda sighs and hands me a piece of paper. “These are who you choose to hang out with already?”

She’s talking to me now.

“They kind of chose me,” I say.

“Choose someone else,” Linda says. “This is your temporary information for right now. Confirming you do go here. Dean Tahg will be in touch soon.”

“Who?” I ask.

“Are you an owl now?” Linda asks.

“Don’t mind her,” Maz whispers to me. “The last time someone touched her vagina social media wasn’t even invented yet.”

“Get out,” Linda says. “Get out of here right now!”

Birdie and Maz giggle. We all turn and hurry out of the building.

Everything is so clean and smells so nice.

We rush outside and they pull me to the left.

We race off the sidewalk.

“Don’t mind Linda,” Birdie says. “She tries to keep everyone in order. Plus, we saved you from any lectures and where you’re staying. Diversion, baby!”

“Perfect,” Maz says. “You’ll meet Tahg too. He’s annoying but you’ll get used to him.”

“He runs the college?” I ask.

Maz and Birdie stop again.

“Harold Tahg is the Dean,” Maz says. “But he doesn’t run a thing. He’s a bitch for everyone else here. This is not like any college you’ve ever been around.”

“I’ve heard things about this place.”

“Anything you’ve heard,” Birdie says, “is nothing compared to the reality of it. I guess we can kind of get serious for a second. The whole idea of mafia kids running this place… that’s all true. Everyone is connected somehow.”

“But I’m not,” I whisper. “That’s what I don’t get. I don’t know who my parents are or anything. I was abandoned as a baby. You know? I think there’s been a mistake.”
