He doesn’t want me to see it.

But if I’m anHeirand I’m part of the mafia, there are things I need to see.

Things I need to learn.

The sky turns orange and purple.

It’s actually a perfect time to be on a quiet drive.

My hair begins to blow into my face.

It tickles my cheeks and makes me laugh.

Then I go around a small bend and take my foot off the pedal.

The golf cart stops humming and comes to a quick stop.

Archer is in the middle of my path, looking right at me.

And, oh look, he’s holding his knife again this time.

Chapter 46

Ilook at my guitar case for some reason.

It’s propped up like a skinny necked passenger.

I take a deep breath.

By now, I should be used to Archer and his dark games.

I leave the golf cart right there in the middle of the path and slide out.

“Can I help you?” I call out.

As though we’re fucking strangers.

Archer begins to walk toward me.

There’s just something about him.

A certain kind of swagger.

It’s scary and sexy all at the same time.

And the knife in his hand just adds to it.

I feel bold.

I point to the knife.

“Going to actually do something with that for once?” I ask.

“You know, sweet thing, I never asked you how your hand was doing,” he says.

I laugh.

The cut on my hand was totally in the past.
