“I like being in control,” Birdie says.

“Did you ever kiss Archer?” I ask.

“That’s not funny at all,” Birdie says to me. “Archer is evil. He’s pure evil. I can’t even…”

“Birdie, let it go,” Maz says. “We don’t need to overwhelm Jaci right now. She’s going to be losing her mind soon enough when she has to get to her classes.”

“Speaking of that,” I say. “How does that work? This is college. Don’t I pick my major?”

“Well, yeah,” Birdie says. “But you need to start with the regular classes. I’m sure you’ll hear from Tahg.”

“Or Brigid,” Maz says.

“Who’s that?” I ask.

“She’s kind of like a counselor around here,” Birdie says. “Just leave it at that. You can give out your major then.”

“I have no idea what I want that to be,” I say.

“Well, you made a comment about your laptop,” Birdie says.

“You’re selling your laptop?” Maz asks.

“I said I would sell it,” I say. “If it was back home. Just because it’s worth so much. It’s just… it’s nothing. It was kind of a joke. It didn’t work.”

“So, you could be good at business,” Birdie says. “Economics. Accounting.”

“That all sounds terrible too,” I say.

“Go into pharmacy then,” Maz says with a smile.

“There is no pharmacy class,” Birdie says. “It would be sciences. Biology and all that.”

“That’s a good career,” Maz says. “Drug dealing. But you’re allowed to.”

“I have never for a second given my life much thought,” I say.

“Which is why we need to get ready and party,” Maz says.

“Maz,” Birdie says. “Really?”

“What?” Maz asks. “She goes here. She’s aThorn. We’re going to party with a bunch ofSavages.”

“She doesn’t understand who they are,” Birdie said.

“I’m literally fucking standing right here,” I say. “I’m not some fucking little virgin who has never experienced life. If I told you half the shit I’ve gone through in my life, you’d both cry. You two are the sheltered ones compared to me. You’re the little rich girls, right?”

“Wow,” Maz says. “You just flip that dirty princess switch, huh?”

“What the fuck is a dirty princess…? What does that mean, Maz?”

“Oh, shit,” Birdie says. She tugs at my arm. “Hey, relax. I’m just trying to protect you. But I don’t think I have to. You want to party with someSavages? Then let’s do it.”

“I’m ready,” I say.

And honestly… what’s the worst thing that can happen?

The campus is so big we take a ride in a custom golf cart.
