It’s a weird moment.

The house is still bustling with the Halloween party.

As we move down the stairs, a girl in a bikini runs up the stairs, screaming.

Behind her is a guy wearing a ghost mask, making noises.

Birdie whimpers and Maz hugs her tighter.

Without hesitation, Cullen grabs the guy by the throat and pulls his mask off.

“I said to keep the stairs clear,” Cullen growls.

“I’m so sorry, man,” the guy says.

Cullen throws the guy to the steps and walks over him.

The party is in full swing.

Music, laughter, drinks and smoke…

Anyone who sees Birdie just assumes she’s drunk.

No big deal.

We take her out a side door and walk her to a golf cart.

Quinn insists on driving us.

Maz and Birdie are on the back.

I sit next to Quinn.

Cullen touches my face.

I look up at him.

He’s somber. Angry.

It’s like he knows something I don’t.

Not a single person besides me even thinks for a second about involving the police.

Which makes sense.

The police will bring questions, their presence, and an investigation that would only hinder the businesses of each family.

Plus, someone from the party did this to Birdie.

Which meant something really bad is about to go down.

“I don’t want you going anywhere without me,” Cullen says.

“Stay,” I say. “I have to be with Birdie. Keep an eye out maybe here.”

“Already on it,” Cullen says. “This is not allowed to happen, Jaci.”

I nod.
