Cullen strokes my cheek and steps back.

Quinn then begins to drive us back to the dorm.

He’s quiet the entire time.

The air is chilly.

The leaves under the tires crunch.

It smells like fall.

Wet dirt and a little spice.

Birdie is quiet.

I look back and she’s sleeping on Maz’s lap.

When we get to the dorm, Quinn looks at me.

“You get to make the call here, Jaci,” he says.

“What does that mean?”

“You tell everyone what to do next,” he says. “This is yours now. She’s your friend. You’re anHeir. This is a lot for you to take on, but you have to do it. Anything you want. You have the full support of theSavages.”

I nod.

I jump out of the golf cart and watch as Maz tries to wake Birdie up.

She makes noise and shakes her head.

I glance at Maz.

We both nod.

Together, we pick Birdie up and carry her into the dorm.

We put her on the couch and cover her up with a blanket.

Then I look at Maz.

She shakes her head and her eyes fill with tears.

I grab her and hug her.

I suddenly feel protective of Maz.

And Birdie.

Things are changing inside me.

Maybe it’s more than protection that’s hitting me…

Maybe it’s revenge.

The next morning Birdie is curled up in her favorite chair, sipping coffee.

“At least my glasses didn’t break,” she says out of nowhere.
