I turn and walk to the door to leave the dorm.

“Jaci,” Birdie calls out. “What are you going to do?”

I look back at Birdie. And Maz.

“I’m going to be a fucking Heir.”

Chapter 55

Itext Cullen that I’m on my way toMakson Ridge.

When I step outside, I look around, half wishing I could see Archer.

I’m not sure if I would fill him in on what happened or if he saw it, and I could ask for his help.

I haven’t seen him since we were in the woods for that little bit.

And in some way he still lingered on me.

I start to walk and then a golf cart pulls up.

Laz smiles at me.

“Need a ride?”

“Did Cullen send you to get me?” I ask.

“Does that matter?”

“No,” I say as I climb into the golf cart.

Laz smashes his foot against the pedal.

The golf cart jerks forward and goes as fast as it can.

The cool air tickles my face.

Leaves jump off the trees, trying to attack me.

This is supposed to be the best time of the year.

Now it feels like a nightmare.

Like Halloween decided to become way too real.

What happened to Birdie…

I shake my head.

Fresh anger boils deep in my stomach.

Laz doesn’t say a word to me.

Which is a good thing. A smart thing.

I would have probably tried to bite his head off or push him out of the golf cart.

When we arrive atMakson Ridge, Cullen is waiting on the porch.
