I toss azazainto my mouth and can’t wait for it to kick in.

Outside, the air is really crisp.

It smells like fall still but it almost has the feel of snow.

When I see Cullen leaning against a tree - waiting for me, smiling - I feel my heart jump a little.

But I also instantly think about Archer.

I’m kind of torn between these two.

Yet I like it.

They hate each other. They know about each other.

It’s… sexy.

“How’s Birdie?” Cullen asks.

“She’s okay,” I say. “One second happy, the next second a mess.”

“I’m really sorry this all happened to her,” Cullen says. “It’s not right.”

“It’ll get fixed,” I say.

“We’re working on it. We haven’t pulled in our families yet. I don’t want to but if something doesn’t happen soon, we will.”

“What happens then?” I ask.

“We call our families and whoever did this will be caught in hours,” Cullen says. “It just gets tricky from there depending on who it is. If it’s someone on campus, they have a family too, you know?”

“Right,” I say. “And that would start a war?”

“Depends on the family,” Cullen says. “It won’t be a good thing but this has to be done. You’ve taken your stance, love. Everyone knows your power now. That’s good. Being a femaleHeiris different for all of us.”

“Cullen, when this is done, I need to figure out who my family is,” I say. “Who I am. I have to know the truth.”

Cullen’s jaw tightens. “What about the situation with that?”

“Archer.”

His lip curls.

“I know you hate him,” I say. “I know you hate the idea of me with him.”

“No, Jaci,” Cullen says. “I hate the idea that he thinks he can just kill you.”

“Do you think he actually will?”

Cullen nods.

I hug myself.

Is it because I’m cold or afraid?

I really don’t know at that point.

Cullen closes in on me and wraps his strong arms around me.
