“I know,” Cullen says. “It’ll be like a war.”

“What about Jaci?” Laz asks.

“I can talk to her myself. Tell her what’s going on.”

What is going on and why does it involve me?

“Do you think she’ll understand?” Laz asks.

“Just let me handle it,” Cullen says. “I have to choose my words carefully…”

There’s a pause.

Then Cullen says something else.

“I can’t just bust into the bedroom and tell her Archer is going to get killed.”

Chapter 65

Iopen the bedroom door.

“Jaci, wait a second,” Cullen says.

“Fuck,” Laz says.

“Get out of here,” Cullen orders Laz.

“I have to go,” I say.

Cullen blocks my path. “Jaci…”

“There’s nothing you can say right now, Cullen,” I say. “You know what I have to do right now.”

“I can taste you on my lips, love,” Cullen whispers. “That was our moment. I want you, Jaci Ruby. I want to feel you. All of you. I want to hold you when we’re finished and protect you from whatever is waiting. Nothing will change tonight. No matter what you do.”

“I thought I wasJaci fucking Ruby,” I say. “I thought I was anHeir.”

“You are,” Cullen says. He touches my face again. “But that’s not everything. Not when it comes to this.”

“And what isthis?” I ask.

Cullen’s jaw tightens.

We stand in silence for a handful of seconds.

Cullen’s thumbs slide under my chin.

He lifts my gaze to his.

He lowers his forehead to mine.

“Why him, love?” Cullen whispers. “It can just be us. But you can’t stop wondering about him. Knowing what he wants to do to you. You should realize by now what he’s capable of. And the way this world works, Jaci.”

“I know,” I whisper. “I can’t help myself. I can’t help what I feel.”

“For him,” Cullen says.

“And for you. I’ve never felt this before, Cullen. I’ve never done this before. In fact, there’s only been one person in my life who…you know.”
