“What?” I ask.

I lean toward her.

“Look,” she says. “There he is. There’s Archer.”

I stare out the window and Archer has climbed from the front seat of some beat-up looking sports car.

As soon as Archer shuts the door, the car speeds off.

The door to the building opens up.

There are two men in suits.

One holds the door.

The other approaches Archer.

They hug.

The man grabs the back of Archer’s neck for a second.

“That’s Michael,” Maz whispers. “Archer’s uncle. If Michael is there…”

Maz looks at me.

I don’t look at her just yet.

I watch as Archer goes into the building.

The door shuts behind him.

Then I look at Maz.

“That’s it,” Maz whispers.

“What do you mean?”

Maz swallows hard.“I’m pretty sure they’re going to kill Archer tonight.”

Chapter 67

Maz drives us back toDSC.

I have nothing to say.

Maz knows I don’t want to talk either.

She drives in silence.

My decision apparently cost two people their lives.

All I wanted to do was help Birdie.

But now…

It’s part of this life, Jaci.

That’s how it goes sometimes.
