Like… the Marty.

From Fay’s.

From my old place.

My… kind of sort of best friend… Marty.

He’s standing at the bottom of the steps of the porch to Makson Ridge.

He’s surrounded by Ronan and Gabriele.

They’re ready to grab Marty’s arms.

Marty looks like hell.

His hair is a little bit longer than I last remember.

He’s a mess.

And I’m standing on the porch wrapped up in the thick comforter from Cullen’s bed.

“Stay back,” Cullen warns me.

“I know him,” I say. “You fucking stay back. Got it?” I look around. “All of you stay back. Don’t fucking touch him.”

“Jaci!” Marty cries. “I’ve been looking for you.”

I walk toward the steps.

Cullen turns and blocks my path. “You’re naked, love.”

“We’re all naked under our clothes, Cullen.”

“You have a blanket on yourself.”

“A thick one,” I say. “Are you trying to control me, Cullen? Are you worried I’m going to walk down these steps and drop this blanket? Do you think Marty is the other guy I’ve been with besides you?”

Cullen curls his lip. “No, love. I don’t care about that stuff. What I care about is this piece of shit is here. On this campus where he doesn’t belong. At this house where he doesn’t belong.”

“Then I’ll make him leave,” I say. “Now move.”

Cullen steps away.

I walk down the steps carefully.

I don’t need to trip and fall, then lose this comforter and give everyone a show.

Once I’m a couple feet from Marty, I look at Ronan and Gabriele.

“Seriously, go away,” I say to them.

“They’ll be on the porch with me,” Cullen announces.

I look back at Cullen.

“No choice,” he says.

He’s protecting me.
