I nod.

I look at Marty.

“This is who you are now?” Marty asks.

“What?”

“Look at you, Jaci. You’re wearing a blanket. Are you hooking up with all these guys? Just letting them have their way with you?”

I throw a left punch at Marty.

Only because my right hand is holding the comforter tight.

It’s a very weak punch.

I hit Marty in the mouth and he turns for a second.

Behind me I can feel Cullen ready to dive off the porch and attack.

I look back at him again and shake my head.

“You don’t know anything about me, Marty,” I say as I look at him again. “How dare you show up here like this? And say what you just said? Are you fucking high or stupid?”

“Both,” Marty says as he touches his bottom lip. “Who are you, Jaci?”

“I’m here,” I say. “I belong here. I’m anHeir. My real family…” I shake my head.

“Okay,” Marty says. “I didn’t really come by to catch up. I wanted to tell you something.”

“What?”

Marty frowns.“Something happened to Fay.”

My heart sinks.

But I keep my face straight.

“What happened?” I ask.

“She was in the hospital for a night.”

“Drinking?” I ask. “Drugs?”

“A man,” Marty whispers.

“The guy from before?” I ask.

“No,” Marty says. “Another one. Fay has like four guys in her life. She has them all balanced somehow. It’s not good, Jaci. One of these days it’s going to explode. Someone is going to get killed.”

“And what do I do about it?” I ask. “Did you come here to tell me someone beat up Fay? I already saw what she-”

“He tried to run her over,” Marty says. “I pulled her out of the street. He clipped her with the mirror and messed up her shoulder pretty bad. She might have to have surgery. But she can’t afford anything, Jaci.”

“Do you think I have money?”

“I didn’t say that. I didn’t ask.”

“Then…”
