“Holy fuck,” Marty says. “This is the new Jaci Ruby, huh? Living in this big house with all these guys to protect you. I know what this place is, Jaci. What this place means. Why you’re here…”

“You can’t be here, Marty,” I say. “I’m sorry. But you can’t. You could have called me or something. There’s nothing I can do for Fay either. I don’t have any money. I’m not rich. I love Fay but she’s always used her body to hide her pain. And then she uses drugs to hide that fact. It’s a vicious circle. And these guys who fall for her just end up…”

I step back from Marty.

I gasp.

“What?” Marty asks.

“You slept with Fay,” I say. “That’s what this is. You think you love her. Oh, fuck…”

“It’s not what you think, Jaci,” Marty says. “I can help her. I can save her. We just need to get her out of there.”

“Coming here won’t do a thing. I’m sorry for both of you.”

“You’re sorry? You got out of there. By luck. Dumb luck. You have to help.”

“Help,” I whisper. “There is no help there. I realized that a long time ago, Marty. You know it too. You just wither and die there.”

“That’s why I came here,” he says. “Fay needs us. Both of us.”

I shake my head. “I love Fay. I really love her, Marty. But I can’t do anything for her. I don’t have anything for her. You and I both know even if she got help and got better, she’d do the same thing. She always does this. The only reason it never got this bad was because I was in the house with her. She didn’t want to bring super scary dudes near me. Which I appreciated.”

“Then come back,” Marty says through gritted teeth. “Come back to where you belong.”

“I can’t do that, Marty,” I say. “This is where I belong now.”

I turn away from Marty and hurry up the porch steps.

“Jaci!” Marty yells. “What the fuck, Jaci? This is what you’re going to do to me? To Fay? After all she did for you?”

I look at Cullen.

I swallow hard.

“Say the word, love,” Cullen whispers.

“Jaci, get the fuck back here and help me and Fay!” Marty orders.

That’s when I feel myself snap.

I nod to Cullen.“Go shut him the fuck up.”

Chapter 71

Ihear Marty plead right before Cullen punches him in the stomach.

Then I look back to see Marty on his hands and knees.

At least that shut him up.

Cullen’s hands are balled up into tight fists.

I get the impression Cullen can do much more. And wants to do much more.

Instead, he turns and walks back up the steps toward me.

“Come on, love, you need to get back inside,” Cullen says.
