“I’m not getting into that, Archer. That’s a trap.”

“You heard I was going to get killed, right? That was the rumor? Makes sense. All the family issues out there. So many families. Plus, look at me. I was supposed to be anHeir. I chose to be aSavage.”

“You’re making a lot of sense,” I say.

“You didn’t just hear it though. You followed me. Where did you follow me to, Jaci?”

“Does it matter now?”

“I’m saying it does matter,” Archer says.

He’s getting mad.

He’s mad as ever.

At least I know he’s still alive.

So this is my cue to turn and leave him be.

I hesitate.

I always hesitate with Archer.

That gives him just enough time to bring out his knife.

“It’s like old times now,” he whispers as he lifts the blade toward my face.

He spins the knife around and places the dull edge to my left cheek.

This is supposed to terrify me.

Yet all it’s doing is turning me on.

My teeth chatter.

I’m cold, a little scared, a little more excited, and a whole lotin the mood.

“I want to hear everything, sweet thing,” Archer whispers. “So start talking. Or else.”

“Or else, what?” I tease. “Are you going to cut me? Huh?”

“Don’t fuck with me, Jaci,” Archer says. “After everything I’ve done for you.”

“I ordered you to do that,” I say. “You didn’t do it for me. You did it because I said to. I’ve got more power than you do, Archer.”

He slowly nods. “Then walk away. Show me your power, sweet thing. You won’t walk away. You’re battling too much at once. You’re too intrigued. You want to know everything. That’s your downfall.”

“My downfall,” I whisper. “My downfall is not knowing everything about myself and my life.”

“Maybe that’s for a good reason.”

“Archer, I followed you… and I saw you go into the building.”

He curls his lip. “And you thought I was going to die?”

“Yes,” I whisper.

“Someone told you that.”
