“Maybe.”

“Was it…”

“No,” I say.

It wasn’t Cullen… even though it kind of was…

“Maz took me to see,” I say. “She drove me. I saw you go into the building and that was it. I just thought you were going to get killed. Because of Darby. His family and your family…”

Archer slides the dull end of the knife along my cheek and then puts the knife away.

“The Detro family,” he says. “Believe me, that’s not a problem at all. I should have done things differently. But my family understands my intentions. They understand why I’m here and why I chose to be aSavage. They may not be happy about it, but they’re still grieving over my uncle’s murder.”

“What about Darby’s family…”

“They’re not a threat,” Archer says. “The Detro family is nothing compared to the Amatti family.”

“What about my family, Archer? Where do I fit in with you?”

“You know right where you fit in, sweet thing,” Archer says.

I roll my eyes. “So what happens now? That’s it? Darby is dead… and…”

“Nobody has proof of anything,” Archer says. “The rumors did their job. Nobody knows what happened to him. His family can do what they feel they need to do. But know their position in everything. They also know what he did.”

“You told?”

“Let’s just say information was shared,” Archer says. “I’m not a fan of that, but it needed to be said.”

“That’s not right,” I say.

“Relax, Jaci,” Archer says. “I didn’t speak names. Never speak names. But it needed to be known. You were right with your decision. To make that call.”

“And you just loved jumping to the front of the line, right? You wanted to kill him. You needed that feeling, didn’t you?”

“So what if I did, sweet thing?” Archer growls.

He gets even closer to me.

His body touching mine.

Towering over me.

Looking down at me.

I look up at him and I swallow hard.

“You enjoyed killing him,” I whisper. “It didn’t hurt you one bit.”

“See how well I fit in with theSavages?” Archer asks.

“You’re not aSavage. You’re not even anHeir. You’re beyond both of those.”

“Maybe so,” Archer says. “Does that scare you?”

“Everything about you terrifies me, Archer.”

“Then walk away, sweet thing.”
