“I don’t know,” I say.

I just finished telling them everything.

It’s dark out now.

It ended up being a really long day of classes.

Then I had the honor of meeting Dean Harold Tahg.

A tall man who looked right out of the mafia.

With big, commanding eyes.

He spoke honestly, clearly, and never wanted a response.

All he did was make it clear that I was anHeir. That my tuition was covered in full. And that he would be in touch with anything else.

I didn’t even have the chance to ask him who I was.

“You’re like an alien,” Birdie says.

“But without all the green,” Maz says with a snort.

They’ve been drinking more than I have.

I sip.

They gulp.

They’re amazed by my life.

I’m not.

“Here’s the thing,” I say. “I grew up poor my entire life. Fay gave up her life for me. To raise me. You know? And now you’re telling me that I’m next in line to some mafia family? And I don’t even know who the family is? How… it makes no sense.”

“Maybe you’re related to Archer,” Birdie says. “You’re his older sister or something. And he wants you dead to take the seat.”

“They’re not related,” Maz says. “That would have been figured out a while ago. Archer wouldn’t have been given the chance to be anHeir.”

“I’m kidding,” Birdie says. “They look nothing alike. They’re opposites.”

“This is way too much for me,” I say. “Like, what do I do now? Just wait around? For what? I need to know who my family is. I need to…” I stood up. “I need to go for a walk and think. That’s what I need. Then maybe I can get in touch with Fay. Maybe she knows something I don’t. As I think about it now, she was really calm about me leaving. It was casual for her.”

“I still want to talk about you kissing Cullen Doyle,” Maz says.

“Me too,” Birdie says.

“Maybe later,” I say. “I’ll be back.”

I leave Maz’s room and the dorm.

Once I'm outside, I feel a little more at home.

Back inDrowingsidethere was nothing to do but walk around at night.

I flip up the hood on my zip-up hoodie and stuff my hands into the pockets.

I start to walk.
