“Tell me more about yourself,” he says. “Tell me something you enjoy.”

“Besides fighting off dudes from the mafia who want me dead?”

“Yeah,” Cullen says with a smile.

He wipes my cut and it stings enough that I see some exploding stars for a few seconds.

“Come on, Jaci,” Cullen says. “What do you like to do for fun?”

“Play guitar!” I cry out.

“Really?”

“What?”

“You just said you like to play guitar?”

“Oh. That. Yeah. I like to play guitar.”

“That’s pretty cool.”

“I’m not very good,” I say.

“Where’s your guitar?” Cullen asks.

“Um, it’s gone.”

“Gone?”

Cullen reaches for a bandage.

I sigh. “I’m not sure if you really understand where I came from. The day I got the letter about coming here someone set my car on fire. It was totaled. Including my guitar.”

“Your guitar was in your car?” Cullen asks.

“Yeah.”

“That sucks.”

“That it does,” I say.

“So you can’t even play guitar now. You really enjoy it?”

“It’s fun.”

“Who’s your favorite band?”

“Nobody you would know,” I say with a smile.

“Now why do you say that, love?” Cullen asks. “You’re judging me.”

“Okay. I’m not into mainstream stuff so much. There’s a band calledLiefall.”

“Nice.”

“Nice?” I ask. “You have no idea who they are, Cullen.”

Cullen finishes bandaging my hand.
