“Exactly,” I say. “That envelope is my fate.”

“How so?” Birdie asks.

“Are you thick in the head or what?” Maz asks Birdie. “Fuck. If she opens the envelope she gets to find out who her family is. Right? But if she finds out who her family is, then Archer will kill her. The only reason he’s not killing her right now is because she doesn’t understand everything. Her not knowing her family is what’s keeping her alive.”

Birdie sits back in her favorite chair and pulls her knees to her chest.

She stares at me through her glasses and frowns.

All I can do is slowly nod.

“Fuck,” Birdie says.

“Fuck,” I whisper back.

“Lake party,” Maz says. “That’s what you need, Jaci. We go and lose our minds. You’re anHeir. Nobody can give you shit about a thing either.”

“Wait,” Birdie says. “I have an idea.”

“What?” I ask.

“I know what to do about the envelope!” she says as she hurries to stand up.

“Can I finish talking about the lake party?” Maz asks.

“I’m sorry, but what’s more important?” Birdie asks.

“Right now? The lake party.”

“Oh, but our best friend can die?” Birdie asks.

“She can’t die if she doesn’t open that envelope,” Maz says.

“You really think a stupid envelope is going to stop Archer Amatti?” Birdie asks.

“I’m just looking out for Jaci,” Maz says. “If she goes to the lake party, you know who else is going to be there. I’m hoping her pussy gets a little attention before it’s lights out for good.”

“Wait, what?” I ask.

I grab for Maz’s arm.

She looks at me and throws an evil grin across her face.

“Who is going to be at this lake party?” I ask.

“Who do you think?” Birdie asks.

“I don’t know,” I say. “That’s why I’m asking Maz.”

“Your protector will be there,” Maz says. “The guy who has bandaged your hand and bought you two guitars. The guy who wants you. The guy who might be able to save you from Archer and his insane family.”

I let out a slow breath.

Would it be so bad if my last night alive is spent with Cullen Doyle?

“The lake has no name,” Maz says. “I don’t know why. You don’t go swimming in it either.”

“Dirty?” I ask. “Scary animals in there?”
