“At the lake party,” Maz says.

I nod. “Yeah. At the lake party.”

Maz and Birdie start planning the night.

I stare down at the envelope.

This doesn’t make much sense to me.

Do I really believe for a second that Archer is going to trust me to look or not look? Is he really going to base his decision and desire to kill me over that?

I swipe the envelope off the table.

Maz and Birdie fall silent.

The temptation to open the envelope is…

I slide the envelope back into my bag.

I smile at Maz and Birdie.

“Let’s get fucking crazy at this lake party.”

Chapter 20

Everyone moves in droves from the campus into the woods.

And then there’s a lake.

Just like that.

It just appears from nowhere.

Like someone put it there as some hidden gem.

Maz and Birdie appreciate the surprised look on my face, as I walk between them.

They promise me I’m safe, but all three of us know that’s a complete lie.

I’m not safe at all.

Envelope or not, if Archer wants me dead, he’s going to make it happen.

He’ll just choose his time, place, and how he wants to do it.

I again still don’t understand what my life is actually worth to anyone.

I mean, honestly, at this point, if Archer kills me, I figure this is what will happen…

Maz and Birdie will be mad.

Maybe a little hurt.

Birdie will cry. She cries over everything.

Maz will hold it in.

She’ll just shake her head and work through her feelings internally.
