“Jacine Ruby?” he asks in a rough voice.

“Depends on who’s asking,” I say.

“I knew a stripper named Ruby,” the driver says. “Had a fling with her.”

“I bet that was a long time ago,” I say. “Or else you had to pay a fuck ton of money.”

“Are you calling me ugly?”

“Ugly and fat,” I say.

“Get in the fucking back seat,” he growls.

“What happens if I don’t go with you? How do I know you’re going toDSC?”

“Fuck,” the man says. He reaches next to him and holds up some kind of official piece of paper with my name, Fay’s address, theDSClogo and information on it.

“That’s it?” I ask.

“What the fuck do you want? A parade?”

“That would be nice. Someone set my car on fire.”

“It wasn’t me,” the driver says. “Want to know how you can believe me when I say that?”

“How?”

His lip curls and the top of his gums are rotted black. “Because if I set your car on fire, you would have been in it.”

I nod, then shrug my shoulders.

And I get into the back seat of the SUV.

Let’s just all hope this guy is taking me to DSC or else I’m going to end up on some unsolved crime show in a few years.

Ireally thought about my life while the SUV drove.

A letter fromDSCwas no joke at all.

It must seem weird for me to just jump into the back of the SUV and trust whatever was going to happen to me.

In my life, I never had the luxury of choices.

Dumped on Fay's doorstep as a baby, now I have the chance to get out of that town and see what waits for me.

I love Fay for all she’s done for me, but this chance atDSCis going to allow me to learn more about myself. Figure out who my family is. There’s a connection there.

What the connection is, I have no idea.

But I’m about to find out.

The drive takes about an hour.

The college is completely hidden.

It’s well within reach of small towns and a few cities.

The perfect setting for a college run by some of the most dangerous people in the country.
