“I don’t want you dead, Jaci.”

“Oh, right. Not right now. But if I find out who my family is…”

“Then I have no choice,” he says. “That’s honor. It’s not an easy thing.”

“Why are you doing this, Archer?”

“I’m going to spend the night here with you,” he says. “Just so you don’t feel alone. So you don’t feel worried.”

“You don’t need to be sweet and kind near me. You haven’t been that way before. Why change now?”

Archer reaches behind him and produces his knife.

It’s amazing, sad, weird and cool how turned I get when I see that knife now.

Like if that’s the weapon that’s going to end up killing me someday soon…

He touches the dull end under my chin.

Then he smiles.

Archer has the most deceiving smile I’ve ever seen on a person before.

“Would you kill for me?” I whisper.

“I already have,” he says.

“That was for Birdie.”

“No, sweet thing. That was for you.”

Now I feel frozen in time.

Stuck between feeling horny and getting ready to die.

What has my life really become here?

Chapter 31

It’s dark.

The room is dark.

I’m next to Archer.

I feel safe.

I’m not sure I feel comfortable.

“Do you know where Seth is?” I whisper.

“Nobody is holding him captive, sweet thing,” Archer says. “And this wasn’t his first time. You know that, right?”

“Yes, I know that,” I say.

“Just like what I did for you and Birdie wasn’t my first time,” Archer says. “And even Doyle…”

“I know Cullen has killed people too,” I say. “I get it, Archer. You’re all killers.”
