“Meaning?” I ask.

“Meaning people that we both can relate to,” he says. “People that cross the lines of our families at the same time.”

“Which can complicate things,” Archer says. “Especially when you have families that hate each other. A war that goes back generations.”

“A war that should be stopped,” Cullen says.

Archer grips his knife tighter. “Not a chance, Doyle.”

“So what does Seth have to do with this?” I ask.

“To arrange a solution to a problem…” Cullen says.

He looks at me.

I nod.

I know what he means.

To arrange for someone to be killed.

“It takes a little bit of time,” he says. “You have to sit down and talk. You have to get approval. You have to work on details. If there’s anything that person has to offer, how do you split it? If there’s a territory situation…”

“She’s not stupid,” Archer says.

“I understand,” I say.

“I’m anHeir,” Cullen says. He stands up. “It’s my job not only to carry my family’s name, but to build upon it. It’s no different if my family owned some gigantic company and sent me to business school so I would come back, take the company over and keep it growing.”

“We don’t need a fucking lesson about your emotions, Doyle,” Archer says.

“I swear on my life…”

Before Cullen can finish, Archer jumps up and lifts his knife.

For a moment I play out the fantasy of these two fighting in front of me.

Throwing punches. Hitting each other.

Blood and sweat.

Grunts and groans.

Archer trying to cut Cullen.

Cullen doing all he can to not get cut.

This shouldn’t be a fantasy for me but it is.

I can’t help it.

After a few seconds I snap back to reality and hurry between them.

Now this is a fantasy.

“Just tell me what happened,” I whisper.

“It’s really simple, sweet thing,” Archer says. “We skipped all the normal bullshit. Decided to have Seth handle this for us.”
