“You want the truth, Jaci?” Cullen asks. “I’m telling you the truth. I’m sorry if some things don’t agree with how you feel. You have a past that’s hard to escape and let go. But you have to stay away from it. It’s dangerous. The entire time you were gone, we were sleepless. Trying to find you. I made a vow to myself, love, that I would kill the person who took you. And now I’m supposed to stand here and watch him touch you? I’m supposed to watch your eyes light up when you see him? He fucking kidnapped you, Jaci.”

“He didn’t hurt me,” I say. “Something else was going on. And I’m willing to bet you both know what it was about. That’s why you haven’t killed him yet. So now you want to fuck with him? Just remember what you said. He’s an outlaw. He knows how to maneuver.”

“What do you expect out of this conversation, sweet thing?” Archer asks. “Do you want to yell at us? Call us names? Do you want to slap us across the face? It won’t change a thing. You have to face reality.”

“I’m facing it right now,” I say. “I’m feeling a lot. I’m seeing a lot. What you two just did…”

“It’s not all fun and games, love,” Cullen says. “This is real life. This is our life. We each represent a family. A powerful family. Much like yours, Jaci. Your family is powerful too. Walking away with some outlaw from some part of your past… that’s a risk. It’s a risk and you have to decide if it’s worth it. Do you want to take that risk? End up kidnapped again?”

“You know what?” I ask with a smile. “I don’t have to worry about that. Want to know why?”

“Why?” Archer asks.

“Because you’ll save me. You both will always save me. You want me. You need me. I know that. So do whatever you have to do now. I know I am.”

I turn and walk away from Cullen and Archer.

It might be the biggest risk I’ve ever taken in my life.

I glance back and I see Cullen start to walk down the steps.

Archer puts his arm out to stop Cullen.

Cullen pushes his arm away.

Archer and Cullen suddenly face each other.

Archer somehow has his knife in his hand.

They look ready to kill each other.

But they can’t do that.

For the fate of their families depends on their ability to remain somewhat calm.

And they both have to make sure I’m okay.

No matter what I do.

I smirk, feeling like a wild badass.

Once I’m close enough to Seth, I slip my right hand into his left hand.

And we walk away together.

Chapter 38

Iwalk with Seth.

Holding his hand.

Yes, this is crazy.

No, I’m not walking away fromDSC.

I’m not leaving Cullen and Archer either.

I’m making a fucking statement.
