“This is your power?” Seth asks. “You use your body. I like that.”

“I’m not using my body. I’m using my last name.”

“What is your last name, Jaci?” Seth asks with a grin.

It’s not Ruby. That’s for sure.

“You killed someone for them,” I say.

“I did what I had to do.”

“They set you up.”

“They did not set me up, Jaci. I bought myself insurance.”

“Insurance?”

“They have power. It’s hard to control power. Insurance helps.”

“You have something against them now,” I say.

“No. They just know who I am now. They know what I’m capable of. They know I can walk up to them and handle business.”

“You knew they weren’t going to offer you a thing,” I whisper.

It’s making more sense now.

“Of course they weren’t,” Seth says.

“Everyone is just a liar then,” I say. “Nobody is real.”

“You know what real is, Jaci. Want to come for ride with me? I’ll show you what’s real.”

“Just leave, Seth. Just fucking leave. Why did you even show up? Huh? Why did you step into my life again? I’m happy here. I’m figuring this all out.”

“Figuring what out?” Seth asks. “You don’t know a thing, Jaci.”

“And you’re going to be the one who tells me?”

“Just come with me,” he says.

He pats the leather seat.

I step closer to him and swing my hand again.

Seth grabs my wrist midair with his left hand.

His right hand is at the back of my neck, digging hard.

My knees give out a little.

He pulls me against him.

His mouth touches mine.

His tongue sweeps across my lips.

I melt for a second.
