Seth glances down at me.
I swallow hard. “We’re no longer talking about my economics class, are we?”
Seth shakes his head. “That’s the whole point of the place, isn’t it? Teach you the theory and then guide you into what it’s really like?”
“Which is violent and bloody,” I whisper.
“Only if it has to be. That’s where we can talk about takeovers and whatnot.”
“Business? Outlaw? Mafia?”
Seth grins. “All of the above. What’s the fucking difference?”
“This stuff makes me… I don’t know.”
“You’ve lived it, Jaci. You’ve lived it your entire life. You were on the wrong end of it with Faye.”
“Faye was always good to me.”
“Of course she was. You never asked yourself why?”
“Of course I asked why,” I say. “Can we keep on the current subject here? I need a passing grade.”
“You’re going to get a passing grade as long as you listen to me,” Seth says. “Apply everything we’re talking about. Let’s talk about the candy idea again. If there’s too many people selling… something has to give. Eventually someone loses money.”
“Wait,” I say.
I prop myself up on my elbows.
Seth looks down the front of my shirt.
I don’t care. It turns me on.
“You drive them out,” I say. “If you can afford to take a loss. Or shift the loss somewhere else.”
“Keep going.”
“You control your market then. You make the rules. You are the market. Right? You set the price and everything else.”
“Look at you thinking, Jaci,” Seth says. “That’s what your professor wants to read from you. You’re looking beyond the bullshit in a textbook. You’re thinking street level now. You have to control the product.”
“Then you control everything else. You control everyone else.”
“Now that we’re done studying, let’s have a little fun,” Seth says.
He slinks down the bed until his head touches a pillow.
He puts his hand to his mouth and then shows me his tongue.
There’s two pills on his tongue.
“One is for you,”he struggles to say.“Come get it.”
I can’t believe how fast I lunge at him.
I kiss him and sweep my tongue to his and steal a pill.
