Holding it like a knife in a horror movie, out for blood.

I jump in front of Maz and have to stop her.

That lets Birdie free again.

She lunges for Seth a second time, this time punching him in the jaw.

Seth takes the hit.

I kick at Maz’s feet and trip her.

“Stop this!” I yell at Maz. I turn head to the right and look at Birdie. “You too!”

“Why?” Birdie asks. “This is the guy that took you? Do you know how scared we’ve been?”

“We haven’t slept since you’ve been gone,” Maz says.

I looked down at her. Her eyes are glossy and bloodshot.

I slowly crouch down. “Maz, I’m here. I know this is all fucked up right now.”

“This is all mafia shit, isn’t it?” Maz whispers. “That’s why we can’t attack him. Who is he? Who is he connected to?”

“You think I’m mafia?” Seth asks. He laughs. “Shit, that’s a hell of a nice thing to say. I’m just scumbag off the street.”

“Far from that,” I say to Seth with my lip curled.

“Then who are you?” Birdie asks.

“Just an old friend of Jaci’s,” Seth says.

“Old friend?” Maz asks.

Seth sticks his right pointer finger into his mouth and curls it and pulls it back out.

It makes a loudpopsound.

He laughs.

“What does that mean?” Birdie asks.

“Nothing,” I say as I stand up.

I curl my lip at Seth.

“Oh, come on,” Seth says to me. “I have to tell them now.”

“Tell us what?” Maz asks.

“It’s nothing,” I say.

“Now we need to know,” Birdie says. “This is all so confusing. You disappear. You’re kidnapped. By this hot guy who knows you…”

“You keep saying I’m hot,” Seth says.

“So?” Birdie look right at him.

Seth inches toward her. “You’re going to turn me on. I think those glasses are cute too. You’re probably delicious to taste.”
