“You don’t grab her like that, ever!” Seth yells.

“Get out of here, Seth,” Cullen says. “That’s the last warning. Or everything is off the table. And you know what that means.”

Archer stands with his knife pointed at Seth.

“Okay,” Seth says. “I came to the party. Had a drink. I guess I can leave.”

“I’ll walk you to your car,” I say to Seth. “And this time I want to watch you drive away.”

“Walk me away, Jaci,” Seth says. “Want a beer?”

“No,” I say.

“It does taste like shit,” Seth says. “I’ll just leave it here. Along with the chair.”

Seth nods to Cullen and Archer.

He starts to walk away.

I’m expecting Cullen and Archer to have a problem with me walking with Seth.

They don’t say a word to me.

Something is happening here…

“Seth, you really need to leave and stay away,” I say as we approach his car. “These guys are no joke.”

“Jaci, come on,” he says. “Do you think I don’t know who they are? Do you think I don’t know about all the families? Who am I? Who is my family?”

“Does that mean you know who my family is?” I ask.

Seth stops and touches my face. “How did you end up with Faye?”

“You know how. I was left on her front porch.”

“Then she’s your family,” Seth says. “She raised you.”

“That means I don’t belong here atDSCthen,” I say. “But Faye wanted me here. She demanded that I come here.”

“For good reason,” Seth says. “It’s all confusing. It’s all fucked up.”

“What’s fucked up is that you keep showing up here. You’re not invincible here.”

“And they’re not untouchable,” Seth says. “Have a little faith in me, Jaci.”

“The guy who kidnapped me? Have faith in you?”

“Can we skip the kidnapped thing?” Seth asks. “That’s a bad word. I took you.”

“There’s a difference?”

“I think so,” Seth says.

“Well, whatever. I don’t have time to debate it. I need to get back toSentral.”

“I know you do. And I will drive away. I promise.”

“I’m still going to watch you drive away,” I say.
