Had she been too self-righteous when she made him pick between her or the revenge?

Naïve, perhaps. Maybe she thought Mr. Montague would turn over a new leaf. What if that wasn’t the case? Also, she had to come up with an excuse as to why she could no longer be in this sham marriage to Richard and Mr. Montague.

She couldn’t tell them the truth.

Even if she disagreed with him, she still had to protect Luc.

“Kira! Kira!”

She heard her name, her brain working to register the familiar male voice, but her heart doing a better job and recognizing it instantly.

She turned in the direction of the voice, hearing it louder, closer.

“Kira!”

But a flurry of people funneling around her made it difficult.

Until…

Luc jogged in her direction, with a black cocker spaniel puppy in his arm.

She bobbed like someone had just slapped her, unsure if she was seeing reality or an alternate universe. But as he shortened the gap between them, her heartbeats drumming in all her pulse points, it became all too real.

She walked a few steps away from the crowd and under the awning of an electronics shop. “What are you doing here?” she asked him. Did he bring the dog as a bribe in exchange for her silence? If so, she would totally accept it. Her gaze ping-ponged between the cute puppy, unaware of the madness around him, and Luc’s face, his eyes searching hers.

“I knocked on the apartment but your cousins said you went out for a walk,” he said, catching his breath.

“Yes, I gathered that. I mean, what do you want?” she asked, internally telling herself to calm down.

“I talked to my father, like you suggested,” he said. “Well, more like he came to talk to me, but also like you suggested to him.”

She leaned closer, excited to hear his answer. “And?”

“I agreed to give him a chance to get to know me again.”

A warm glow flowed through her, and her shoulders dropped like she’d just removed a heavy costume off her. Her stubborn husband had given his father a second chance. Does this mean this puppy is a thank-you gift? she wondered, then chastised herself for making it about her. “So. No more revenge plan?”

A smile curled his lips. “No. I withdrew my offer and even though he wants me to be by his side on the merger, I don’t want it. Aviation isn’t my passion. I also talked to Samantha and agreed not to go against my father publicly.”

A twinge of hope stabbed at her heart. Could this be also a new beginning to the two of them, as well? Don’t get ahead of yourself, Kira. “I’m happy you two are working it out. That’s wonderful.”

He glanced down. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about my original plan and lied about the whole Samantha thing.”

“Is that why you brought this adorable puppy? As a forgive-me gift?” she asked, unable to keep the anticipation from her voice.

“I drove two hours to pick him up. I got him because I listened when you said you had one taken away from you as a kid. I got things taken away, too. This may be crazy, but the two of us… We have so much to give to each other.”

All of a sudden, she felt lightheaded. A bottomless sense of peacefulness and joy filled her. She was falling and flying at the same time, and it was extraordinary. “Luc…”

“I’m not done giving it to you, Kira. And you’re not done either. Forever isn’t long enough for us.”

He caressed her cheek, her flesh warming in response. “I love you. I want you in my life.”

“Are you sure?” she asked, her voice throaty.

“I want you so much. We belong together, Kira. Please let me spend my life showing you.”

“Actually, the puppy trick worked.”
