“Trouble in paradise?” Liam asked.

“Everything is fine.”

“Okay, well, that’s a lie. Did you fall in love with your wife or something?” Aidan frowned and scrubbed a hand over his face. “Oh, shit.”

“Don’t look at me like that,” Aidan growled. “I’m not in love with her. I’m…very fond of her.”

Liam snorted. “You keep telling yourself that, man. I never thought she’d actually manage to trap you like that.”

“I said I’m not in love with her,” Aidan insisted, ignoring the dull ache radiating from his chest.

“Then go home with someone else tonight. Maybe it’ll improve your mood.”

Aidan’s head jerked up. “What?”

“I can see at least three women staring at you right now. Not including the blonde. Go fuck one of them, and maybe it’ll fix whatever this mood is that you’re in.”

“I can’t do that.”

Liam gave him a long look. “Because you’re in love with your wife.”

“Because she’s not pregnant yet,” he snapped.

The excuse tasted bitter on his tongue. He hated the words as soon as he said them, but Liam seemed to accept it. He shut up, at least.

When the waitress came to clear their empties and offer them another round, Aidan caught Liam eyeing the blonde who’d been making eyes at them.

“I’m tapping out and going home, Liam. She’s all yours.”

Before his friend could respond, Aidan pushed away from the table and weaved through the crush of bodies to the door. More women waited in line outside the club, curves sheathed in short, tight dresses, hoping to impress the bouncers enough to jump the line. A few of them sent looks his way, but he ignored them as he climbed into his truck.

He rolled the window down despite the temperature, needing the fresh air to wash out the acrid taste of the lie he’d told Liam. He wasn’t waiting until Viv was pregnant to sleep with someone else. He didn’t want anyone else at all.

He wanted only Viv, and whether he was ready to admit it or not, she tugged at him in a way that no other woman had before. He might be playing a dangerous game, but he wanted to see if it was possible to have her and not have it all blow up in their faces.

It wasn’t late, but the house was quiet when he pulled in. Brogan’s Jag and Declan’s Range Rover were both gone. Either the house was empty, or only the women were home. He let himself in and took the stairs up two at a time. It didn’t occur to him she might be asleep until he opened the door to find the room bathed in darkness, but when he moved to her side of the bed, it was empty.

Frowning, he crossed to the bathroom. She wasn’t in there either. Where the hell had she gone? He turned for the door to go in search of her when it opened, and she walked in, body silhouetted against the light from the hall. She reached for the light switch and screamed bloody murder when she saw him standing in the middle of the room.

“What the fuck, Callahan!”

She slumped against the door frame, hand over her chest as her breath wheezed in and out of her lungs. He had to force himself to bite back a grin. Seconds later, he heard someone running down the hall before Evie appeared in the doorway, gun in hand.

“Are you okay?" she asked Viv.

Viv flicked her wrist at Aidan and took a deep breath. “I’m fine. Your brother-in-law scared the ever-loving shit out of me.”

“You mean your husband?”

Aidan watched Evie slip the safety back into place.

“When he does shit like that, he’s your brother-in-law.”

Evie chuckled. “Glad I didn’t shoot him.”

“Me too,” Viv agreed with a nod. “What a mess that would have been.”

“I’m standing right here,” Aidan said, tone dry.
