“It didn’t seem that important to him when he was bragging to his friends about fucking other women.” Viv winced and Alex sighed. “I’m sorry. That was a low blow.”

“It’s not like I asked for any of this. Every second of the last few months was directed by someone else. I get to be in control of this. He may not be interested in having anything to do with this baby, but I won’t feel right if I don’t at least make the offer. Let him know the door is open.”

“You’re right. I’m sorry. You’re a good person, Viv. You’ve always been the best of us.”

Viv smiled. “I thought that’s what they said about you?”

Reaching for her glass again, Alex laughed. “How are you feeling about everything else? Everything that happened with Collin?”

“Relieved, honestly. On some level, that feels awful to say because he’s dead, but…”

“The bastard deserved it.”

“Right.” Viv huffed out a laugh.

“I still can’t believe he did all those things. Calling you an ungrateful bitch just because you wouldn’t leave your marriage and satisfy whatever ridiculous fantasy he’d conjured up in his head.”

Viv faltered as she reached for her glass. How did Alex know what one of the notes said? She’d never given her friends any specifics.

“I know,” Viv said slowly. “At the party he kept saying he could tell how much I wanted him. How much I missed him.”

Alex rolled her eyes. “Please. How delusional. I don’t know how you tolerated dating him before. He was never good enough for you.”

“No, he wasn’t. What about that guy you’re seeing? The one Felicity told me about?”

Alex’s eyes drifted to Viv’s face, and she cocked her head at something in Viv’s tone. “We stopped seeing each other. He was interested in someone else.”

“That’s a shame. I hope it was on good terms at least.” Viv tried to keep her voice light, fingers clutched tight around the glass in her hand. “Who’s the someone else? Do I know them?”

Alex studied her for a long moment, and Viv read her suspicions in the way her eyes narrowed and her mouth thinned into a hard line.

“You might. They’ve been away for a bit. Playing house.”

The glass slipped from her fingers and crashed to the carpet, spilling cold lemonade over her shoes. “It was you.” Alex’s mouth split into a sinister grin. “The whole time?”

“Not the whole time. Collin was responsible for the accident and the thing at the engagement party.”

“But everything else. Everything after. That was you?”

“Guilty.”

“But why?”

Eyes darting around the room, Viv tried to identify the best escape. Alex sat between her and the front door, and there was no guarantee Viv could make it to the back door before Alex caught up with her.

“You’ve always had horrible taste in men, Viv. Remember the guy you gave your virginity to in high school?”

“Robbie?”

“Yes. He flopped around on top of you for two minutes, and he was done. Then there was Kyle. A total idiot.”

“I thought you liked Kyle,” Viv said, edging her hand into her purse to see if she could find her phone.

“I’m surprised he didn’t flunk out. Who was after that? Oh, right. Greg with the bad breath. I mean, really, the list could go on. You get my point.”

“Yes,” Viv agreed, her heart pounding. “I see what you mean. Collin was the worst of them, though.”

“No, he wasn’t,” Alex snapped.
