The general whistled. “Can you get inside to check?”

He could if he had the ability to remain invisible. “Not at the moment. Even Paris, the woman who works at the company, doesn't have any access. I’m not even sure the main building and this possible underground garage are connected.”

“While you're looking, check to see if there is some kind of escape route.”

"We already did, and we think we found one." Rider explained what they spotted. “A patrol circles behind the compound walls about once an hour. Most likely there are surveillance cameras, but we haven’t been able to find them. It’s why I doubt we’d get far if we were able to open the hatch. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a tunnel to and from Delancey’s office.”

“You’re probably right. Let me put on my thinking cap.”

He’d forgotten the most important part. “We did find how someone was distributing the cocaine.”

“How?”

Rider detailed how Grayson and Paris managed to get a hold of the cocaine laced coffee. “We could take it to the sheriff’s office, but we’d like to have a local lab test it first—on the down low of course.”

“That I can help you with. Let me make a few calls and get back with you.”

“Thank you, sir.”

“You bet.” He then disconnected.

Rider dropped down on the bed to think. If the general could find a lab to test the cocaine, that would be a step in the right direction. It would also be a step in the right direction if he could learn where the underground tunnel went. It could go nowhere, or it could be the key to taking down Richard Delancey.

At one point in the investigation, Rider had considered trying to get a job as a janitor, but if the cocaine factory was not connected to the main pharmacy company, he’d be wasting his time.

It was often a good idea to close his eyes and pretend he was the suspect. What would he do if he wanted to have access to the lab, as well as be able to escape wherever he was?

Tunnels could have more than one entrances. An image appeared in his mind's eye of a small infrared drone flying a foot above the ground. If he had one, he could check what was underneath that mysterious hatch, which would provide him with much-needed intel.

Just as he was about to grab his keys to go shop for such a device, Paris and Grayson returned with the food. He'd forgotten he’d asked them to bring him food.

“Smells great,” Rider said.

Paris smiled, and when she handed him the bag, his nails extended again.Damn. He had to figure out a way to stop this reaction. It was embarrassing.

“Tastes good too,” she said.

An idea suddenly formed. “I have a question for you. When you were in Delancey’s office, did you happen to notice a large bookcase in the room?”

Paris closed her eyes and inhaled. It was almost as if she could recreate being back in his office. “Yes.”

“Can you describe it?”

“Why does it matter?”

CHAPTEREIGHTEEN

“I’m thinkingthe bookcase in his office could be hiding an entrance to his escape tunnel,” Rider said.

“There were books behind his desk, and yes, the bookcase was floor to ceiling. That’s all I noticed, other than it was opulent. I was too nervous to notice much of anything else.”

“I understand. Don’t worry. It might be nothing. Or it could be something.”

She smiled. “Way to hedge.”

Rider chuckled.

“What did the general say?” Grayson asked.
