“Did Mrs. Gonzalez say why Doug was there?” Rider asked.

“That’s the problem. Shecouldn’tsay.”

“Either she doesn’t know—which I doubt—or she fears her husband will be sent back to prison for working in a cocaine factory.”

“Maybe you can speak with her,” the general said. "The police have promised to send a car around every now and again.”

Like that would do any good. “We can keep watch. Turns out Mick, Connolly, and Charley are going to help us.”

“Fantastic.”

“Unless we see Doug actually harm her though, there’s not much we can do. I don't think we want to tip off Delancey by talking with her.”

“You might be right. It’s better not to engage with her,” he said. “Good work, Rider. Keep in touch.”

“Will do.”

A moment later, he received a text with the name of the testing lab. It said to use the general’s name for faster results. Rider smiled. It helped having people in high places.

Since Grayson and Paris would be gone for a while, he gathered some of the coffee beans, texted Liam and Alex where he was going, and headed out to the lab. Turns out it was only about a twenty-minute drive.

Once inside the testing facility, he asked for his beans to be tested for cocaine.

The worker huffed out a laugh. “Sad to say, you aren’t the first one to ask about coffee beans.”

“Really? Do you have a list of their names?”

“I’m sorry, sir. We can’t give out that information.”

He bet the general could find out. While Rider wouldn't learn much if the person said they bought the beans at CadEspresso coffee shop in Chesterfield, it would be nice to have the confirmation.

“How long will this take?”

The young man typed something into his computer. “We can let you know within a week.”

That wasn’t going to work. “Is your boss around?”

“Sir, he doesn't like to be disturbed. He’ll tell you the same thing.”

“Can you at least tell him that this is at the request of a General Stanfield Armand?”

The young man stared at him. “Sure.” He backed away as if he feared Rider might pull a gun on him or something. He then disappeared into another room.Silly boy.

A few minutes later, an older gentleman appeared. “Chris tells me there is an emergency?”

Rider needed to decide how much to tell him. “We believe there is a factory producing cocaine near here. My friends and I, working with General Armand, are trying to find evidence. If you could process this sample quickly, it would help immensely.”

The man smiled. “Of course. Stop back tomorrow, or if you give me your email, I can send you the results.”

“That would be great.” After Rider paid, he gave the man the needed information and left.

On his way back to the motel, he called Liam.

“Hey, boss.”

Rider filled him in on what the general said. “It doesn’t seem as if the police can do anything for this woman and her family until she’s physically harmed.”

“Would you like us to keep an eye on her?”
