She grinned. “Fine, but I’m sure by tomorrow, I’ll be good as new.”

CHAPTERFIFTEEN

Preston hadn’t sleptmuch last night knowing that Ariel was in the other room, but he and Benson had decided that she needed to heal.

Close to seven a.m., Preston finally admitted that sleep wasn’t going to happen, so he got up, dressed, and went into the kitchen where he found Benson.

“Hey,” Benson said.

“I see you’re up early too.”

“I couldn’t sleep much.”

“Me neither,” Preston said. “What are your plans for the day? I, for one, would really like to meet the general’s men, Alex and Liam. If we are going to go head-to-head with some wolves, I need to have a bit of practice.”

Benson nodded. “I’ll give them a call. I’m sure they’d love to work with you. By the way, I just received a rather cryptic text from Ackerman, of all people. He said it was really important that I meet him in his office, but he didn’t say what it was about.”

“What do you think he wants? Don’t tell me he’s feeling guilty for doing a shitty job with Trent’s case.”

Benson huffed. "Who knows what he wants."

Preston nodded to Ariel’s bedroom. “If you leave, and I work out with Liam and Alex, can we trust her to stay put for the day if we’re both out?”

“That’s a tough one to answer. She won’t have a car, but I wouldn’t put it past her to call someone. Knowing Ariel, she’ll want to go to work.”

“Would that be so bad?” Preston asked. “If she promises to let everyone know about her stalker, they might watch out for her.”

“I’ll see if she even wants to go to work. Her mind might be willing but not her body. If she had to lift a heavy dog, it could prove to be quite painful.”

Preston dipped his chin. “This is Ariel we’re talking about. She’ll suck it up.”

“Good point. Besides, we don’t want her to think we don’t trust her. This way, if she’s at work, it won’t look like we’re too controlling.”

Preston smiled. “Good luck with that.”

“I know, right? I’ll give Liam and Alex a call and set up a time for you. I need to head to town now, so can you drop Ariel off at work whenever she’s ready to go?”

“Sure thing.”

Footsteps sounded in the hallway.

“Speaking of Ariel,”Preston telepathed.

“Did I hear my name?”

Her hearing was excellent if she had heard them, but maybe they had raised their voices. He and Benson would have to be more careful in the future. “We were wondering if you planned to go into work today?”

She smiled. “Yes. Thank you. And before you ask, my ankle is a bit sore, but I am feeling much better.”

Images of making love with her tonight caused his teeth to sharpen, forcing Preston to look away. She’d notice the change in his eye color in this light and most likely ask him about it. Preston could only come up with so many excuses. “That’s great. Benson has to go to work right now, but I can drive you whenever you’re ready.”

“That is so sweet. Thank you.”

Preston brushed his chest with his fist. “That’s me. Sweet as can be.”

She chuckled at his antics.

He looked over at Benson. “Don’t forget to check with our trainers.”
