“I’m here.”Preston thought it was worth the chance to telepath.“Hold still.”

Benson clawed the wolf’s rear to keep him from moving. That gave Preston the opportunity to bite down on the animal’s flank. Before he could move up to the wolf’s throat, a gun shot rang out.

CHAPTERTWENTY-FIVE

Benson sensed more wolves, only these two were in their human form.

“Stop! Unless you want a bullet through your heart. Now shift.”

Benson looked over at the person delivering that command. Not that he needed to. He knew that voice. Uncle Adam had arrived with his deputy.

The bullet through the heart was probably a bluff since Benson doubted his uncle could tell who was who. Preston let go of the wolf, shifted, and stumbled backward. His friend looked like hell. His arms and legs were dripping with blood, and there was a gash on his face that would take a while to heal.

His uncle and Noah moved forward, guns pointed at the group. One by one, the rest shifted. Benson noted that Liam and Alex were the last to shift, which was smart. A human had little chance against a wolf.

It appeared as if two of the six attacking wolves were dead. Benson did a head count. His two brothers were alive, thank goodness, but they had pounced on the wolf he was fighting. With three against one, that wolf gave up easily.

“Cuff them,” his uncle told Noah.

Since there were four men, Benson went over to his uncle to help. “Have any more cuffs? I’d love to do the honors.”

Uncle Adam handed him a set of cuffs. Apparently, Noah was carrying three sets. Benson headed to Hammer Schmidt. “Turn around.”

“Fuck you.”

Benson had had it with this guy. Most likely he had been the one to stalk Ariel, since the images had been sent from Pauline’s Coffee Shop. For sure, he’d had a hand in taking Anna. Whether he’d tried to run over Ariel, he didn’t know.

Using what little strength he had left, he punched the man with a right hook and followed with a left upper cut. Hammer stumbled back and landed on his butt. “Now get up,” Benson demanded.

Preston would be pleased at Benson’s newfound fighting skills. His pleasure evaporated when he flexed his fist. His knuckles stung and throbbed from the punch. He wouldn’t be surprised to find he’d broken a finger or two. Hammer had a hard face.

Hammer wiped the blood from his lip and cheek and slowly rose. Being outnumbered seven to one, he gave his back to Benson, who gladly cuffed him.

When all four men were in custody, Benson asked his uncle what they should do with the two dead men. The coroner was a shifter, so that wouldn’t be a problem if they delivered them to Dr. Sensori. Had Benson been in a fight to the death before, he might have known what to do.

“Bury them on the property. I suggest we not mention it to your dad. You know him. He’s a bit squeamish about those things.”

“You don’t think Paul Franklin will come looking for his missing men?”

“Let him try to find the bodies. Your dad has what? Forty thousand acres here? Bury them where no one will find them.”

“Hammer will tell Franklin that two of his men died here.”

“You’re right. I’ll speak with your father about this. We can find a way to protect the property for a while.”

“Thanks.”

As soon as Noah loaded up the men in the van, Seth and Trevor came up to him. “What the hell was that about?”

Benson had been remiss in not filling his brothers in on the latest saga. “It’s a real long story.”

“I think we should be told the next time there is going to be a turf war on our property.” Seth didn’t sound particularly happy, and Benson couldn’t blame him.

“I agree. I never thought the Franklin Clan would find me out here.”

Preston limped over to them. “Hey.”

“Shit, man. Someone took a chunk out of that pretty face of yours,” Trevor said. “Why don’t you two go inside and rest a bit. Then you can fill us in on what happened.”
