Page 84 of Meant for Them

“Sounds good.”

Alex and Liam barely had a scratch on them. Go figure.

Preston held out his hand to Liam. “Thanks for the assist. I might not have made it without your help.”

Liam shook his hand. “Nonsense. You’d be surprised how much you can endure when your life is on the line, but I was happy to step in. Taking a wolf by surprise works well.”

“I’ll try to remember that.” Preston attempted to smile but then winced.

“Come on, Preston. We need to do a bit of healing before heading back to Ariel.”

He nodded.

“We’ll stay in the barn if you don’t mind,” Alex said.

Since they only had a few scratches on them, which were healing already, he understood. Besides, the conversation with his family wouldn’t be all that pleasant.

Together, he and Preston headed to the house. When they entered, his mother must have sensed them, because she came out from the back where the kitchen was situated.

“Oh, my. What happened?”

“The men who kidnapped Anna Ackerman were not happy that Uncle Adam and Noah rescued her.”

“I heard she’d been taken, but not that she’d been found. Come into the kitchen. I don’t want you sitting in the living room and getting blood all over the place.”

That was his mother. She was loving but always practical. “Mind if I take a quick shower to get off some of the blood?”

“Go ahead.”

“Preston, you can use my bathroom. Looks like you could use one,” Seth said.

“Appreciate it.”

While Benson didn’t live at home, he still had his old room, which included some of his ranching clothes. “I can lend you something clean to wear.”

Preston nodded. “That would be great.”

After Preston picked out something to put on, they headed to the showers. Benson was disappointed that even after scrubbing off the blood, many cuts and bruises remained. Too bad he couldn’t rest at his parents’ house for the day. If he remained here too long, Ariel would be worried.

Maybe now would be a good time to come clean about who and what they were.

After he did the best he could about his appearance, Benson headed downstairs. Preston had yet to come down, but his mother, father, Seth, and Trevor were sitting around the kitchen table. Two mugs of steaming coffee were in front of the empty seats.

“I figured you could use a cup,” his mother said.

“Thank you.”

“Would you like me to fix you a sandwich?” she asked.

Normally, he wouldn’t inconvenience her, but he needed the strength to heal. “That would be great.”

“I hear we had a skirmish on the property,” his father said.

“We did.”

“Since we have two dead men that we have to bury, how about telling me what the hell you’re involved in.” That almost sounded as if his dad thought he’d committed a crime. Benson sipped his coffee. Uncle Adam must have spoken with Dad already.

“Do you remember the Trent Williamson case?”
