I stood and took my plate over to the stove to wrap it up. At this point, I didn’t have an appetite. I wanted to ask him where he planned to go since he wasn’t working, but that wasn’t my concern anymore. If he wanted to do his own thing, he’d do it without me.

“I don’t want this to be a permanent thing,” he said softly, making his way over to me. “I just need some space to get myself together.”

“Okay,” I agreed, wrapping my plate with foil.

“That’s all you have to say?”

“How long will you need to pack your things and leave?”

Raven turned me to face him. “I can have everything out of here this weekend, but I can leave tonight before you get back home.”

“Okay.”

We stared into each other’s eyes for a few seconds until I couldn’t take it anymore. My spirit was telling me Raven was keeping something from me, but I wouldn’t let it bother me.

“Cartier,” he called quietly as I left the kitchen, but I ignored him.

I didn’t think I was going to cry, but my eyes watered, anyway. I genuinely cared about him and thought we would be together for a while. Maybe not marriage, but a few years. Raven and I had a good time together.

Him asking for space totally caught me off guard. Just yesterday we spent my off day having the time of our lives. Now I couldn’t help but wonder if that was because he knew he’d be breaking up with me soon. I briskly made my way to the bathroom in our room, but before I could close the door, Raven was stepping inside.

“I’m sorry,” he muttered, cupping my cheeks.

It didn’t matter how hard I tried to push them down, he held on.

“It’s fine,” I reasoned.

“That’s a lie.” Raven tilted my head by my chin, forcing me to look into his eyes. “This is hurting me and I’m the one doing it, so I know it’s hurting you, too.”

“Then why are you doing this? You have every right, it just… doesn’t make sense.”

“Life ain’t making sense right now, Car. It won’t until I’m back on my feet. That’s why I asked for a break, but I understand where you’re coming from.”

Chuckling, I nodded and pulled away. “Breaks lead to break babies. You’re gonna fuck around and I’m not going to wait around for you to get somebody pregnant or fall in love with someone else.”

“I don’t think either of those will happen, but I respect your decision.”

Nodding, I scratched the back of my ear. “Can you get out so I can shower?”

“Can I join you?”

“Raven, n—”

His lips came crashing down on mine, and as much as I wanted to push him away, my body felt the complete opposite. Apparently, my heart hadn’t told my body he broke up with us. Well… that he’d made us break up with him.

Raven sat me on top of the counter, then cut the shower on. My eyes scanned every inch of his frame as I watched him undress. If he wanted some parting pussy, I’d give him that, but this in no way meant my body or apartment would be an open door. Raven would have to stand on the fact that he wanted space, and as used to having him as I was, I would give him just that.

“Hello, Mister Concierge.”

As much as I didn’t want them to, my eyes trailed down Penny’s frame. I didn’t know her real name, but her eyes were the same coppery shade as a penny. She had beautiful brown skin and wild, curly hair. I could see why she was Kahlil’s favorite pick when he first started coming here.

“Penny,” I greeted, extending her itinerary for the weekend.

Usually, she only booked a room when she had male company for the evening, but from the looks of it, she was in her room alone.
