“But that can’t be true. Rumir’s her son.”

“I don’t know either man personally, so I’m only going by what I've heard from others. You will have to ask them for the full story, but they’ve never been able to stand each other." Rehema smiled apologetically, and I placed my hand over hers.

"Thank you, Rehema, for everything.”

“I’ve always wanted a sister.” Her cheeks began to turn pink, and I smiled at her adorable shyness. “I mean, I have half-sisters—pureblood gods that my mother had with other gods—but I'm not like them. I'm a demigoddess, and honestly, sometimes I don't feel like I belong—not around normal supernaturals, definitely not with humans, and not with the gods, either. But I feel comfortable around you.”

“That’s because you’re not ‘Rehema the demigoddess’ to me. To me, you're just you, my best friend. But I understand what you’re talking about." And I did. "On Earth, my pack and my family loved me. And I didn’t experience discrimination like some Enchanted have. But still, I'd look at the other wolves and somehow feel out of place.” My claws elongated. “I have claws, speed, strength—all of that—but I'm not quite a wolf. Because I can’t shift."

“You’re definitely strong.” Rehema was staring off, lost in thought. “I’m not sure I’d have been able to handle what happened to you last night. Having the ability to see the past and the future? It has to be a burden.”

“It is,” I said more to myself than her, recalling the red substance that had seeped into my body in the vision. “Sometimes it is.”

“You should know that Rumir is a little rough around the edges. He has a temper, from what I've heard. But that’s to be expected, considering who his father is." Rehema rolled her eyes. "I don't mean any disrespect, because he's your mate but be careful, okay?"

I nodded. “Thanks. Now, you look like you need some rest. Were you up the whole night? You were welcome to use my guest room.”

Rehema looked down at her dress. “I didn't want to leave you, but I do need a shower and something to eat. I’d best get home.”

The doorbell echoed through the house, and we both paused. I took a deep breath, and my heart fluttered at the scent that sprinted up the stairs and through the room door.

Rumir.

Rehema nodded towards the door. “Do you want me to stay?”

“No, I need to talk to him. I’ll be okay.”

I wasn’t sure how to feel about Rehema's words of caution. Did she think he’d hurt me? Then again, she’d admitted that she’s only heard rumors. Maybe his temper wasn’t as bad as she’d been told.

We both got out of bed, and she tapped her bracelet to teleport, then said goodbye and left. I stood in my room, silent, trying to get a handle on my emotions.

I took a deep breath, then another. I could do this. I had to.

Rumir’s scent was so different from Lucian’s, but it was equally alluring. Still, I was nervous about speaking to him. I had no idea what to say. But I’d better get it over with. I quickly freshened up in the bathroom before heading downstairs.

My heart pounding, I opened the front door. Rumir stood there with a bouquet of flowers in his hand, their petals white and glowing.

"Hi." He greeted me with a smile, and I returned it, my wolf howling with delight. “Are you okay?

“Hi,” I said back to him and then pointed to the flowers. “I'm okay, yes. Those are beautiful. It looks like they're glowing."

He held them out to me. “They remind me of your hair, as corny as that may sound—white, pure, glowing.”

“I don’t glow,” I laughed as I accepted them.

"You do, or at least your eyes did last night."

I buried my nose into the flowers. “Oh, well, thank you. Would you like to come in?"

He nodded and bent his head somewhat to step inside. Obviously, my house hadn’t been built with hosting dragons in mind. He was wearing black jeans and a simple black t-shirt, attire I found strange for a god, but then, what did I know? I hadn’t had many experiences with gods.

Right now, he looked like any other supernatural creature, aside from his staggering height, and that made me feel a bit more comfortable. Dealing with any god or goddess called for utmost caution. How was I to act when my mate was one of them?

He waited while I closed the door, his eyes not leaving me once. As I led him into the living room, I could feel him watching me still. I didn't feel bothered by it, and my wolf was enjoying the attention. I felt safe, although I didn’t know the man. But having him so close, in my home and my space, my secondmate, was making me a bit nervous.

"Um,” I drawled. “I'll just put these in water and be right back, okay?"

“Take your time, Natalie.”
