The beasts had two sets of eyes, one above the other, and their backs were covered with horns to the tips of their tails.

Their shrieks echoed around us, mixing with the cries of everyone trying to get out of their way. Many people were teleporting, but some, perhaps in shock, were choosing to run.

There was a stampede as people fled in fear, some bumping into others trying to teleport, while others fell and were trampled on in the process. It was chaos. And because tonight was the full moon, no one could shift.

I couldn’t move, stunned at the scene unfolding below us. The creatures were trampling over everything in their path, running wildly and destroying several booths.

There were hundreds of them, big and small, and they just kept coming

Finally, I managed to snap out of the stupor I was in. Taking a deep breath, I said, “We have to get down there. We have to help the people who are trapped.”

Rumir took a step away from me. His shirt disintegrated, and he pulled a sword from his back. I stepped forward to go down and help when Lucian grabbed my arm.

“Wait, they’re herbivores, so they aren’t attacking. If they’re behaving like this, something had to have spooked them.”

He was right, I realized. When I took another look, it seemed that several wolves had noticed that fact as well, and were quickly making a barricade of sorts to drive the creatures away from the festival and back into the forest.

"Okay, then we should help guide them back into the forest," I said. But Brian stepped to the edge of the hill, sniffing the air.

“Something else is coming,” he said, tilting his head to the side, as if listening to something.

I took deep breaths, trying to differentiate between the scents of these creatures, ours, and everything else. But too many were unfamiliar. Suddenly, Lucian, who was still holding my arm, pulled me back.

“We need to get everyone out of here. Now!”

Before I could say anything, a gurgling roar, high-pitched and eardrum-shattering, exploded around us. I winced at the sound and a creature three times the size of the gorgalian I’d fought in the forest broke through the trees.

Trees and branches went flying as it crushed two of the smaller animals beneath its giant paws. Its body was like that of a lion, but it was covered with chunks of earth, making it look as if it was wearing armor. Its cavernous mouth fell open as it roared, revealing two rows of sharp teeth, and more cries of terror erupted from those who’d thought they were safe.

“Please tell me that thing is an herbivore?” I asked no one in particular.

Several people were hiding behind the booths instead of running, and I knew they were going to be caught by that thing if they didn’t move.

“It’s not!” Rumir’s wings sprouted from his back, the gold on them glinting under the moon’s light.

Scales appeared on his arms, down his chest, and on his back as he pulled his second sword from beneath his skin. It looked like he, too, was wearing armor since his scales ended at his neck. His eyes became black and his irises morphed from round to oval. They appeared almost vertical.

I watched in wonder as his claws and fangs appeared as well. He was magnificent in his dragon form, even if not fully transformed yet.

"Natalie, you need to teleport. Leave!" Lucian said to me.

Just as Rumir leaped into the sky, he said, “You all need to leave! You can't shift, Lucian! Leave this to me. I'm the god.”

"Both of you shut up!” I cried. “We don’t have time for this. I'm not leaving. There are kids down there!"

Rumir ignored me as he rose higher in the air, his wings picking up the dust and leaves around us. “Brian, you're with me. Get as many people away as possible! I'll hold it back! Lucian, take her!”

“Wait!” I cried and yanked my hand away from Lucian’s grasp. Rumir smiled down at me and winked before he flew away to fight alone. “Rumir! Damn it! We have to help him, Lucian!”

Several white wolves were directing people into the forest and helping those who'd fallen, but they too were at risk. No wolf—not even white ones—could shift during a full moon.

My attention was drawn back to the beast that cried out in pain and recoiled as Rumir appeared before it, breathing fire that lit up the grass and flowers on its head.

Beside me, Brian hissed, a sound I hadn’t heard since the vampire war on earth. As he ripped his shirt from his body, I watched as his skin began to change color, becoming as black as the sky above us. Soon, not even his tattoos could be seen.

His claws elongated, black and pointy, and the whites of his eyes became black while his irises turned red.
