Was this his vampire form?

He looked at me, growling as his fangs descended, and in the blink of an eye, he was gone. I lost sight of him until I caught a glimpse of him down below, carrying two women in his arms as he ran into the forest, then returning seconds later to grab three kids huddled together under a booth.

I couldn’t believe something like this was happening. The festival was in shambles. Without warning, Lucian lifted me up and threw me over his shoulder.

“Put me down!” I screamed. But my attempts to escape were futile.

He was running through the forest with me. When the sound of Rumir battling that monstrosity alone began to fade, we came to a stop, and Lucian placed me on my feet.

“They need help!” I slapped his hand away from my bracelet where he was trying to force my teleportation.

"And I'll go back to help them. But there is nothing you can do!"

“Natalie!” Rehema and Tate came running to us. “Thank the Gods you’re okay!”

Several people were behind them, bleeding and healing slowly while children clung to their parents, crying. My heart was beating so loudly, I couldn’t hear my own thoughts. This was all too familiar.

It was far too similar to the bloodshed I’d witnessed on Earth.

Why is this happening?

"Lead everyone away from here, Natalie, okay? We'll handle this." Lucian didn’t give me a chance to protest before he turned and ran back the way we'd come.

My wolf was crying out for him and Rumir, begging me to go after them.

“What the hell is going on?” I yelled.

“It’s a florkin," Tate answered, wiping at some blood on her arm, though the wound was already healed. "I’ve never seen one before. They’re rare nocturnal beasts that don’t even live in these parts.”

“I thought things like this didn’t happen here?” I asked. “Was anyone killed?”

"I don't know," Rehema answered, her eyes glowing green as she looked past me. I heard the florkin's roar growing louder. “Nothing like this has ever happened before. There are dangerous animals here, sure. But they'd never openly attack a large group of supernaturals like this.”

"I have to go back, Rehema. You can stay here and heal as many people as you can, but I have to go back. There will still be others there, and they’ll need help if Lucian and the others are busy fighting that thing."

A man holding a sobbing little girl stepped forward, blood running down his face. “Something is wrong with it,” he said while the girl clung tighter to him. “Its eyes were red like swirling paint and not yellow like they should be. I think it’s sick.”

"Sick?" Tate repeated, and several people began to whisper, sharing her confusion. “There are no diseases in this realm.”

The man shrugged. But I’d heard enough. Too much time was being wasted talking. Later we'd find out what was wrong, but right now, we needed to act.

I'd faced worse than that beast when I’d lived on Earth, fighting those vampires that were snuffing the light and life from the Earth. I hadn't sat back then. I hadn't run.

No, I’d fought back. And I was going to do the same here.
