"Maybe they had only just been infected. It could be that they hadn't gotten to that stage yet," Brian speculated. Rumir nodded in agreement.

"Maybe," Rehema said. “But what if this disease or whatever it is starts spreading to souls?”

We all fell silent.

Rehema had said it casually, a stray thought. But thinking about it? It was terrifying. Lucian and I looked at each other, suddenly aware that one thing in my vision was clear—the fact that he and Rehema were being consumed by the red substance in my vision meant that souls could be infected.

If only I’d just have another damn vision already!

“I was talking to Mom about what happened at the festival with the florkin. She left before the incident, so she didn’t know all the details,” Brian said as he swiped at the blood on his face. “She said she’s had a bad feeling lately, kind of like an overwhelming sense of dread. But she hasn’t been able to figure out just what’s wrong. A few days before the festival, she went to the mall and saw a witch attack a kitsune, forcing him to transform into his fox form to protect himself. It started as a simple argument but escalated into violence. What if Rehema’s right and this can spread to souls?”

“Then we have a bigger problem on our hands than just a few animals acting out,” Rumir growled. “If souls start to behave like these animals, war is going to break out.”

“I’m going home,” Rehema announced. “I can’t think when I stink this bad. And this is starting to freak me out.”

I felt for her and understood her worry. She had no experience with this kind of thing. I, on the other hand, had left one war behind me. Now it looked as if I’d landed somewhere with one brewing.

I looked down at myself. “We shouldn’t be talking about this out in the opening. I’m going to go home as well. I need to get out of these clothes."

“Yeah,” Rehema drawled. “I’ll see you guys later.”

She teleported after giving Rumir back his bow, and I held his swords out for him to take.

"Are you okay?" he asked me, and I nodded.

“I’m fine. I just need to go home and clear my head.”

He nodded and glanced at Lucian, then jerked his head at Brian and teleported. Brian went next, mumbling that he could feel cripec blood slipping into his pants.

Once alone, Lucian and I turned to each other. I closed my eyes as I released a breath.

"Are you sure you're okay?" he asked.

I nodded. But with my eyes closed, my power flared to life on its own, and in the darkness behind my lids, I saw a vision. A woman I didn't know was shaking hands with me, and she was dressed in the white uniform worn by those in the Spirit Recovery Facility.

I was smiling, as was she, and I stepped back as the vision ended. My eyes flew open. Lucian grabbed my arm, a look of concern creasing the skin on his forehead.

"I'm okay," I told him, smiling ear to ear. This wasn’t the vision I’d been hoping for, but I’d take it. "I think I found my soul purpose at the S.R.F!”

"Congratulations!" Lucian pulled me in for a hug, but the moment our bodies touched, we stepped back, grimacing with disgust.

The drying cripec blood was sticky, creating strings between us. I gagged and tapped my bracelet. Lucian did the same, and we both teleported our separate ways.

I needed to get ready in case I got the call today.

I was finally going to get the chance to fulfill my purpose.
