“What did you just do?” I asked Lucian as Rehema and I stepped out into the afternoon sun.

He kept walking, putting distance between us and the café. When we finally stopped, he turned to me, his eyes roaming my body as if he was searching for something. “I have many gifts that even other white wolves don’t have. Are you hurt?”

"I'm fine," I answered as I pulled the jacket I was wearing closer. "I had things handled."

“I know,” he answered with a slight smile. “I saw that.”

"Still, you stormed in like a white knight."

"That's my job as your mate, isn't it? To be there, even when you don't need me to be."

With those words, I was rendered silent, and my cheeks burned with a blush. Rehema cleared her throat and placed her closed fist over her heart.

“Hi, I’m Rehema, florist and part-time dominatrix. It's nice to meet you."

Lucian did the same in greeting but with an arched brow. “It’s nice to meet you, Rehema. You’re a part-time what?”

“She’s joking,” I cut in before Rehema could respond. “What was that guy’s problem? He was clearly unhinged. He needs to be in a hospital or something.”

“Like a psych ward in hospitals on Earth?” Rehema shook her head. “We don’t have those. The Soul Recovery Facility purges all illnesses on arrival to prepare them for eternal afterlife here.”

The Soul Recovery Facility was where I had woken up after I died on Earth, where Ruby and Axel still slept.

"But that just now, that was extreme, wasn't it?" I looked from Rehema to Lucian. “Right?”

“Hmm, you’re right,” Lucian looked around us at the humans and supernatural creatures going about their lives. “A few days ago, a fae did something similar.”

He tapped at his bracelet and a hologram of a keyboard appeared. His fingers danced across it, and then it vanished. Seconds later, two men—white wolves—teleported in front of the café and went inside.

“They’ll take the dryad to the gods.” Lucian released a breath, but his face was still twisted with concern. “Incidents like this are rare, but two instances happening so close to each other is cause for concern.”

“What do you mean?” Rehema frowned.

Lucian shook his head, smiling. “Oh, there is no need to worry. We’re just taking precautions. If that dryad needs help, he’ll get it. That’s all.”

“Right,” she drawled, but I saw worry in her eyes.

I’d forgotten that Rehema had been born in this realm, and all she knew was peace.

Not me, though. As sad as the truth was, things like this happened all the time on Earth—and usually worse. When I peeked up at Lucian, he was watching the white wolves work inside the café, his brows furrowed. But when he turned back to look at me, his frown vanished.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” he asked again.

I nodded, unable to look away from him. I was still stunned by what I'd just seen. I'd forgotten that white wolves had abilities other wolves didn’t have, and I was incredibly impressed by his control.

While I was on Earth, white wolves had been considered almost mythical. Yes, we knew they’d existed, but they’d died out centuries before my time. In fact, Elinor had really been the only white wolf that I had even read about and that was from over 600 years before I was born. I wondered for a moment how different my life would have been if white wolves had still been around.

“Well,” Rehema drawled. “I must be off. I have um, a thing to do for a friend.” She hugged me quickly, and I knew she was only leaving so we could be alone. “Text me later.”

“I will.”

She tapped at her bracelet, and seconds later had teleported, leaving me alone with Lucian. I took a deep breath as I turned around to face him, giving him a tightlipped smile.

“So,” I drawled. “Thanks for what you did back there. It wasn’t necessary, but thank you.”

“You’ll have to get used to it, I’m afraid. And I’ll have to get used to you getting into trouble so often.”
