We all had our stories. And none of them were rosy.

It was one reason I never told Natalie his secret and allowed him to come clean himself—even though it took the fool forever to do so. In the end, Natalie had found out about it from the witch he’d found to break their mate bond.

According to Natalie, he had been terrified of being with her, scared of losing control and hurting her, and was determined to live alone forever because he felt he didn’t deserve to live in this realm after the things he’d done on Earth. So he’d secretly researched ways to end their bond. But in the end, he couldn’t do it. The mate bond was too strong. And Natalie, too special.

I, on the other hand, desperately wanted a mate. It was all I’d ever wanted. And from the moment I set eyes on Natalie, I knew I’d never be able to live without her.

So, here we were, both needing the same woman, neither one able to give her up. It wasn’t an ideal situation by any means. But right now, I needed to look past my irritation. I had Natalie to think of, so for once, I would be the bigger man.

"We almost lost her," I grumbled, and his eyes opened, revealing black irises.

Like I’d thought, he wasn’t calm. He was trying to not explode and take us all with him.

"I know," he growled, and his shoulders rose as he inhaled deeply.

Neither of us spoke again, and minutes went by while I ground my teeth. I could still hear Natalie screaming for us as she was dragged into the portal. If only we’d arrived a minute earlier.

Something like this never should have happened when she had two mates.

Two!

"I'll never like you, Lucian, but we need to do more to protect Natalie. Even mated to both of us, she could have died tonight."

He looked at me for a time until his irises reverted to their normal brown. “I agree,” he said, then tapped his bracelet. “We need to make sure one of us is with her at all times.”

He held his arm out, and I did the same. Our bracelets beeped as we shared our contact information. Then I stood up, placed my food in the fridge, and turned to him.

He'd gotten up as well, and for a second, we just stared at each other. My eyes narrowed. For centuries, just being in the same room with the man my mother chose over me filled me with anger.

Now, even though I was still irritated by his presence, I needed him to help protect Natalie. As long as he did that, I could deal with this situation. We couldn’t let her die because we were both incompetent and unable to get along.

Becoming friends wasn't in the cards for us, so we both turned away at the same time. My dragon roared in my head as I made my way outside, my wings sprouting from my back before I leaped into the sky.

Come tomorrow, I would remind the gods exactly who they were dealing with. They needed to handle their shit, or this realm was going to fall into chaos.

Natalie had told me that I had my mother's qualities and they were something to be proud of. The Werewolf Goddess—or Moon Goddess, as some called her—was known to be straightforward, if stubborn. But my mother always did whatever she felt was right.

She was asleep now, in an alternate reality of her own making, resting after centuries of trying to end the vampire race. But until she awoke, I was going to do what she always did—be the god who got shit done.
