"What danger are those on Earth going to face because of this?" She stilled at my question. "I mean, if this realm falls, what will happen to the deceased on Earth?"

When she said nothing, I rose from the chair and leaned forward, putting both hands on her desk in front of me. “Give me something, Hekate. Anything.”

“The problem is that the virus isn’t from this realm. We aren’t facing a threat that originated here. And in order to make sure we don’t disrupt the balance between the realms, this must be handled very delicately.” She suddenly looked tired. “That’s all I can tell you, Rumir.”

What? Holy shit.

We stared at each other for a few seconds before I looked away. There were several different realms, some inhabited, some simply barren land.

But the gods could easily travel to all of them. If another realm was pouring a virus into this realm, what did that mean?

Ila returned, slithering across the ground and wrapping around the legs of Hekate’s desk, but she seemed larger than she had been before she'd vanished.

“If you want to protect Natalie”—Hekate reclined in her chair—“then do whatever it takes to wake your mother. She’s slept long enough. Then let us handle the rest. This is an Imperium-level issue, and you may be a god, but you’re not an Executive. ”

Ila hissed and Hekate went still while she stared at the snake. It looked as if they were having a silent conversation. Then Hekate’s mouth turned downward, and her jaws clenched.

“I have to go,” she said, rising from behind the desk. “There’s a problem in the city.”

“Is it infected?” I asked, stepping forward. Her head tilted to the side as she looked away from me.

Her eyes had turned white, which meant she was communicating with another Executive. My mother often did the same thing.

“Yes,” she answered. “And it would seem your mate is once again involved.”
