“It’s the chaos I consumed last night,” I admitted. "It's not stable, and I need to release it, but I can't do that just yet. Where could I possibly let it go? In the city? No, I just have to hold on, and when I get the chance, I will use it to help us win this fight. I won’t waste it. I’ll send it back to Cedric and let him have a taste of the devastation he’s caused.”

I hung my head and pressed a finger to my temple.

"I'm so tired, Lucian. But I know we can't stop now. I can't stop now." I turned to face him. "He’s hurting Rumir.”

“How do you know?” he asked, holding my arm gently.

“I can feel it,” I answered, and placed my hand on my chest. "I can feel him, the same way I can feel you. And I just—can't bear it."

He sighed and pulled me in for a hug, then stopped. "Does it hurt when I touch you? Are these bruises all over your body?”

I shook my head and hugged him. “Just my arm, and it only hurts when I use my powers.”

He held me tight, and I listened to his heartbeat, the pounding matching the beat of my heart. I'd only had a second to see into Cedric's mind, and I learned nothing. It would take too long for us to search all the mountains in the realm. And like he'd said, I was running out of time.

I'd talked a big game, but I knew we were losing this war. Since we were already stretched thin, it looked like the human realm was doomed.

I pulled away from Lucian, frowning as I recalled my conversation with Cedric.

"What is it?" Lucian asked, and I stepped out of his arms.

“Cedric loves hearing his own voice,” I mumbled. “That man talks too much. And if you really listen, you discover that he says more than he realizes." I turned away, a hand on my chin. "I didn't see much in his mind. He pushed me out right away, but a slip of his tongue might have given me some idea of his next move."

I turned to Lucian. “I think he’s going to attack the human realm next.”
