Mountains of bodies or not, Cedric couldn’t be left to rule.

“Rumir! That's enough!" I yelled, and I created a bubble around him with my chaos.

He shattered it with one punch, and I teleported before his sword could cut through me.

“I don’t want to hurt you,” I teleported behind him, and he swung at me.

The Goddess and Cedric fell off the balcony, and I dodged and ducked to avoid Rumir’s sword. He was relentless, bearing down on me with everything he had, and I held my hands up, creating a shield to stop his sword from cutting me in half.

“I’m not your Rumir anymore,” he growled. “You should worry about me hurting you.”

“We’ll see about that.” I pushed him back and teleported.

Appearing above him, I fell on him, my legs over his shoulders, and grabbed his head. I forced my way into his mind, but before I could dig deep enough, fire exploded from his mouth and engulfed me.

He threw me off him, and although I absorbed the flames, they'd still burnt me. His power was on another level.

He started teleporting quicker than I could follow, but I did the same, trying to avoid his attacks. When his sword sliced my thigh and then my right arm, he tried to teleport again but was held back.

His left leg was covered in ice, and Lucian, who I hadn’t realized had woken up, got to his feet.

The ice spread up Rumir’s body before he could stop it, until finally, he was encased in it to his eyes. I slipped into his mind and barreled through his mental blocks, and this time I fed him my memories.

I showed him the night we met at Poseidon’s ball, the first real moment we’d shared at the club in the City of Souls, the time we’d spent together on the way to the Goddess's castle, and finally, the night we became one. I showed him everything and reminded him of our love and what he was being robbed of.

I showed him what he'd done when he’d attacked the Goddess, Lucian, and me, and his brows furrowed with pain. The ice around him cracked, but Lucian didn't let up.

I absorbed the virus in Rumir, and right away, I rocked back from the power.

An explosion suddenly sent me flying, and Lucian and Rumir fell back as well.

Cedric’s wings were covered in black scales, and he was holding the Goddess by her throat. He threw her, but this time Rumir caught her. When I saw Rumir’s eyes—those beautiful green eyes—I sighed with relief.

He was back, but a sharp pain in my arm drew my attention. When I looked, I could see it was black and blue. The chaos I’d taken from Rumir had been even more potent than what I'd absorbed in the City of Souls.

Cedric released several waves of power, pinning me to the wall and Lucian to the ground. Rumir and the Goddess couldn’t move either.

“How disappointing,” Cedric spat at Rumir. “You’re all fools! You can’t stop what’s happening. I don’t need any of you! You’re just part of a time I’ll wipe from history!”

“And you!” he said, pointing at me. “I was going to take the chaos you’ve nurtured so well. But I don't need it, and I don't need you!"

Beyond Cedric, the dragons at the mountain's base roared.

“You all came this far to watch the end from up high. Don’t worry—I’ll save you all for last. It’s time!” he shouted, turning his back to us and the dragons roared again. "Become the gods you've always been, and let's end this so we can start our new journey!"

“Don’t do this,” Rumir growled, straining against Cedric’s hold.

“It’s already done, son," Cedric said over his shoulder.

Suddenly, I had an idea. I stopped fighting his hold and allowed his power to pin me to the wall. Instead of fighting it, I opened myself up to it. It was chaos, and no matter how Cedric changed it or how he used it, I could still absorb it. I started pulling in his power, and was freed.

Cedric sensed what I’d done, but not soon enough. As he turned, I released the chaos I absorbed, as well as my own and what I’d taken from Rumir, encasing him in a bubble, like a fish trapped in a small bag.

It wouldn't hold him for long, but it would be long enough.

I hurried to the edge of the cave as Cedric struggled to free himself, and every dragon, in their human form, injected themselves. The virus glowed beneath their skin, spreading through their necks.

It wasn’t too late, I told myself. I couldn’t give up now! I hadn’t come too far to fail!
