EMBER

Cassian and Emily flew into the driveway, and Cassian ran from his car to Sam, who’d been waiting for him outside with a few other members of the pack and me.

“What happened?” he asked, his aura sparked with lively, vibrant color.

“Liam saw a feral wolf outside the woods near here,” Sam explained. “It wasn’t close enough to hurt us, and it didn’t show any interest in coming closer, but if it did, we’d be in deep shit.”

Cassian pinched the bridge of his nose. “So, where is it now? What happened to it?”

“We don’t know,” Sam answered. “We caught sight of it, and then it took off in the opposite direction. Nearly made Liam shit his pants seeing a feral so close.”

Cassian faced Liam, asking him to explain. “Well, I was patrolling the area, like you asked, and I saw the glowing red eyes before anything else. I’m not sure if it saw me, but it ran off. That’s when I rushed back to the pack to let you know.”

“Was it…” Cassian began, not finishing his sentence.

Sam shook his head, clearly understanding his alpha’s intentions. “No, it wasn’t one of ours.”

Cassian sighed, both relieved and disappointed. “I’ll call the other nearby alphas and let them know to keep an eye out. Maybe they have some intel or know something about the wolves.”

“Maybe it came from Victor’s pack,” one wolf shouted out. “What if they’re trying to hurt us?”

“How? They can’t control the wolves,” another person countered.

I remained silent as I watched the wolves try to solve the puzzle, throwing out possible connections or theories.

“Maybe they just turned feral unexpectedly, and it was a wrong place, wrong time situation.”

“What if there are more?”

“Can this happen at any moment? I thought it only happened when we changed and didn’t revert back?”

Question after question. The pack was antsy and anxious, fearful of what was to come. As they spoke, I felt the familiar claws wrap around my mind, and I knew that a certain someone was trying to communicate with me. Like he used a telepathic ding to alert me of my subconscious messages.

Balthazar.

I excused myself, though no one paid me any mind except for Emily, who was too wrapped up in the wolf situation to ask me anything further. I could’ve made up an excuse about getting a glass of water, but what was the point?

When I walked away, far enough from everyone that I wouldn’t be disturbed, I answered the call. Yes?

Ember, his voice rang out into my consciousness, echoing through the depths of my mind. Oh, how I’ve missed our chatter. Tell me, dear, have you seen any strange happenings of late?

What do you know?I asked, cutting to the chase and skipping the pleasantries.

A light chuckle sounded, and I already grew tired of his coy behavior and the amusement in his tone. That wolf was no mistake, dear. I wouldn’t stay at that warehouse much longer. Gather your friends and find somewhere else to go.

And how am I supposed to do that? You expect me to ditch everyone else? I mentally scoffed, letting him know of my displeasure. Besides, how do you even know that?

I’m sorry, my dearest Ember, but I cannot answer your questions yet. With time, my darling. With time.

Dearest? Darling? He spoke as if we were close.

Bullshit! You expect me to let you in my mind, but you won’t even tell me who you are? How do I know you’re not the enemy or working for the enemy?

You don’t.

Then how can I trust you?

You can’t.
