I gritted my teeth, my anger making it harder to hold the connection. I needed to be calm and meditative to maintain this link, so I took a deep breath before telling him, Then I don’t want you entering my mind anymore. Not if you won’t tell me who you are.

I could hear him sigh, and it sounded almost sad. I promise you, I will reveal it all soon. For now, I will give you some information. You’ve heard of the Black Hole, yes? Take a visit there in the next few days and ask for Raul. He can give you the information you seek. I only ask that in return you don’t tell anyone about our conversations. Speaking with you is a big risk on my part.

Then why are you helping me? I’ll admit that I was skeptical of whatever answer he would give. But I swear if he tried to skate around my answer again…

He chuckled. Because we work for the same cause, my dear. Let’s just say that we have a symbiotic relationship. You can trust me on that. But I do expect you to use that information to help me later.

Help him later with what? Why couldn’t he just give me a straight answer on one damn thing? What do you mean?

You’ll understand soon enough. I must go now. I only tapped in long enough to give you this warning. Unfortunately, I cannot say anything else, and that is not of my choice. I will return to you soon.

And with that, he was gone—the clutches of his claws released.

I debated telling the others, but I didn’t want them to assume I was communicating with the enemy. If experience had taught me anything, it was that people rally against anything they didn’t understand. Plus, if Balthazar was telling the truth, then I didn’t want to cut off the only contact we had that could help us with this Samara mess.

But what if I only told Cassian and Emily? They were working for the same cause, right? So, why shouldn’t they know? Because he trusted you with information in exchange for it to be kept secret, I answered myself.

What I could do was tell them without telling them. Alright, now I had a plan.

I gathered Emily and Cassian to speak with in private, where we wouldn’t be overheard or disturbed. Once the door to his den was closed, I took a deep breath, not even bothering to sit because my nerves were all over the place, despite trying to deep-breathe my way out of a panic attack.

“What if the wolves aren’t going crazy, but someone is changing them? I can’t tell you why I think that, but it is what I believe.” Hopefully, that sounded more mystical than it did secretive.

Cassian’s aura formed a tinge of gray at the edges. His eyebrows were creased in a concerned expression. “Do you think someone sent them here?”

“Maybe?” I shrugged.

He tapped his thumb to his chin. “If someone is changing the wolves, then who? Samara? Does she have that power? And if she hates wolves so much, then why do it one by one? Why not change us all at once, like with the curse, and be done with it?”

A lot of questions there, Cass. I wanted to tell him to slow down, but his questions were valid.

“If Samara is the one behind the wolves turning feral,” Emily said, “then she must have something planned with them. But, what?”

“Thanks for the suggestion, Ember. And Emily,” Cassian said, glancing at Emily from the corner of his eye as she stared back with a smitten smile.

Get a room, I wanted to tease—but now was not the time. I’d crack jokes later when Emily and I were alone.

“I’ll mention it to the other wolves, so we can tighten security. Not that we can tighten much more than we already have. I’ll also be speaking with the other nearby alphas to warn them about the feral wolves getting closer, and see if they know anything.”

After our talk, Emily and I headed back to the room we’d been staying in. Though Emily hadn’t been there for a few nights, I was glad to have her back and begged her to stay. She agreed so long as she texted Griffin to let him and Morgan know about the wolf.

“About that…” I told her my suspicions of Morgan, and how I didn’t think she should be so open with our information around her.

“It’s Morgan, she’s a bitch. You just need to get used to it. Besides, she’s been so much friendlier lately. She even told me that she was over the mate thing and figured there was no use fighting with fate.”

I told her to be wary, insisting that Morgan’s aura was darker than I’d ever seen and that she wasn’t one to be tampered with. But would Emily believe me? No. She just brushed it off, claiming Morgan was sour but harmless.

What really struck me as odd was when she mentioned that Morgan invited her for a girls’ night at her cottage and that I should come along.

Hell no, I didn’t want to have a girls’ night with Morgan. But there was no way I’d leave Emily alone with her.

“I don’t know if that’s a good idea right now, with everything going on. You saw what happened when we had a mini vacation, and we barely managed to make it back in one piece.”

“Yeah, but we handled it, didn’t we?” Emily pointed out.

I nodded, knowing that anything else I said tonight would fall on deaf ears. Tomorrow, we would talk more. We would get Cassian and Griffin together, and I would tell them about my plans to visit the Black Hole.
